Summary

Memories of the Alhambra Episode 2 continues opening the audience to this fascinating world and succinctly builds on the character development.

This recap of Memories of the Alhambra Season 1, Episode 2, contains spoilers. You can check out our thoughts on the previous episode by clicking these words.

As suggested in the last recap, Memories of the Alhambra Episode 2 begins with Yoo Jin-woo (Hyun Bin) realising the error of his ways and backtracking on the range of insults he threw at hostel owner Jung Hee-joo (Shin-Hye Park). His gives false body language, and he looks so proud of his U-turn, lying about his short-term memory loss. His assistant arrives in town, and he is determined to find the programmer and brother to the hotel owner, Jung Se-joo (Chan-Yeol Park).

What is flagrantly clear early in the series is that the story will adhere to the gaming aspect over the storyline, with cute gameplay displays and missions to complete. Memories of the Alhambra is a gamer’s dream, twisted with a plot that smells of corruption and greed.

In the pilot, we were told that Jung Se-joo does not want to sell to Yoo Jin-woo’s business partner Cha Hyung-seok (Park Hoon). We were treated to his first appearance in the episode. The businessman is well ahead in levels, with a far superior sword.

The reason for the distrust of this character is not apparent, but Memories of the Alhambra Episode 2 gives the audience a tease, with the prospect of the first human dual. Unfortunately, the game developers who are on the ear of Yoo Jin-woo every time he plays the game, advises that he should not fight due to the superior advantage and he logs out.

Episode 2 sees Yoo Jin-woo try and entice Jung Hee-joo into a civilised chat, and he succeeds, telling her that she should upgrade her hostel to a hotel because Alhambra will be bustling and the town will be magic. It’s clear that he will do anything to land the deal with her brother, and will manipulate her so far into offering her a better life to achieve this.

In the end, Memories of the Alhambra Episode 2 shows Yoo Jin-woo battling it out on a train. What seems to be obvious gameplay, he has found himself ambushed by gunmen in the carriages, and he valiantly partakes in a shootout. As the episode ends, he shoots one more bullet at the last gunman, who shoots as well, and the credits roll.

I will be back next week, but so far, Memories of the Alhambra is an intriguing watch.
