Summary

Compulsively watchable and still remarkably difficult to predict, The Victim Episode 2 continues to be a fine legal thriller.

This The Victim Episode 2 Recap contains spoilers. You can check out our thoughts on the previous episode by clicking these words.

I’m not sure that by the end of The Victim Episide 2  we necessarily know any more than we already did about whether or not Craig Myers (James Harkness) is really the notorious child killer Eddie J Turner. It certainly seems as though he might be — but that’s the point, isn’t it? He’s shy and awkward, sure, and little is known about his childhood, which he insists was neglectful and not worth remembering in the first place. He’s the right age, but so are lots of people. He has a history of violence and did a stint inside, which is how he was recognized and identified to private detective Mo Buckley (Pooky Quesnel) — but he shared a cell with someone else, and couldn’t that person have been Eddie J Turner just as easily?

There’s a lot of this stuff in The Victim Episode 2; mounting coincidences that, taken together, paint a damning portrait of Myers. According to his wife Rebecca (Karla Crome), in the immediate aftermath of their daughter being born, social services were involved. Could that be because the supposedly reformed Eddie Turner was being evaluated, or because, as Craig himself claims, Rebecca was struggling and they had no other support?

Either way, James Harkness was brilliant on the stand in The Victim Episode 2 — not in the sense that he presented his case well, but in the sense that he came across like a flawed, frustrated human being, believable as either a man falsely accused or a killer on the brink of discovery. That’s fine acting, propped up with fine writing, both of which are what make The Victim such a compelling series.

The public’s number one suspect is Danny Callaghan (Andrew Rothney), the boyfriend of Anna’s (Kelly Macdonald) law-student daughter, Louise (Isis Hainsworth). He’s shifty for sure and could be either Eddie Turner or the mysterious Grim Reaper who attacked Myers on Halloween. But Myers’ friend Tom (John Scougall) is a likelier suspect if you ask me.

Then again, it could be anyone. It’s just that kind of show. We won’t have to wait long to find out, but in the meantime, let me know in the comments who your prime suspect is. Maybe we’ll get to the bottom of it before the Edinburgh high court does.
