Summary

Next in Fashion is the Hell’s Kitchen of fashion, and that is not necessarily a bad thing.

Netflix series Next in Fashion season 1 will be released on the platform on January 21, 2020

The Great British Bake Off, Hell’s Kitchen, America’s Next Top Model — competitive reality shows are big business and it is no surprise that Netflix keeps tapping into this market. It’s addictive. Audiences love to back an underdog or a “sure” winner. We love the stories behind the competitors. We love the anxiety that overcomes you when the host has to make a decision of who leaves the competition next. Netflix series Next in Fashion combines elements of the winning formula to make a watchable, entertaining reality competition based on fashion.

And there will be those who will point their nose upwards at the title — Next in Fashion Season 1 appears like a crowd-pleaser for those interested in the fashion industry. And in many ways it is, but from my perspective, a person that has zero desires to influence our next generation with my clothes on Instagram, I experienced hand-over-mouth moments watching the dying minutes of each episode of Next in Fashion.

I don’t think it was the fashion for me. I enjoy competition which is why I naturally veer towards many sports. I enjoy watching paths to greatness and also the downfalls. Next in Fashion, like Hell’s Kitchen, feels more like a sport than cooking a Michelin star dish or sewing together a dress.

The format is intriguing and familiar as well. The competition begins with fashion designers teaming up. Each team has to design a garment that is in line with a theme. The first episode introduces the “red carpet theme” and then at the end, their models try the clothing on and strut down the runway. You can tell how much it means to each team; this is their life, their passion and for some, it almost feels like their next chance despite some of them putting robes on the likes of Jay Z and Beyonce.

And then at the end of each episode, there is an elimination.

Of course, there are highs and lows to experience in the Netflix series. With fierce competition brings emotions, and emotions lead to arguments. Expect some fireworks.

I’m not saying Next in Fashion is the next best reality competition out there, but it deserves a chance. And Netflix gave it that chance. Regardless if you are into fashion or not, Next in Fashion Season 1 is worth a shot.
