3.5

Summary

“You’re Not Going To Get Me To Say Anything Bad About” proves a mostly serviceable episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm bolstered by a fun guest star.

This recap of Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 10, Episode 4, “You’re Not Going to Get Me To Say Anything Bad About”, contains spoilers. You can check out our thoughts on the previous episode by clicking these words.

You might recall that last week’s episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm ended on something of a cliffhanger, but “You’re Not Going To Get Me To Say Anything Bad About” only remembers it vaguely. Larry David allowed his vengeful feminist assistant Alice (Megan Ferguson) to choke on a dry scone in fear of worsening an already pretty serious workplace sexual harassment claim, and thanks to the oxygen deprivation she suffered during the incident, she’s no longer mentally well enough to see the case through to court. Phew, I suppose, though the way this is casually brushed aside very much suggests that nobody had any idea where to take this subplot.

Larry is reminiscing about this in his still-under-construction “spite store” with Leon (J.B. Smoove), who gets slightly more than usual to do in Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 10, Episode 4, and proves a standout presence alongside a guest-starring Timothy Olyphant in what is otherwise a fairly standard episode.

At least the location changes, though, with everyone, including Ted Danson and Larry’s new love interest Donna (Megyn Price), finding themselves at the swanky wedding of Micky (Olyphant) in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. To get there they all need to travel by private plane, which raises the issue of weight, particularly for Larry, who learns that Donna has lost a decent amount of the stuff in the last two years, is convinced by Leon that she’s a “yo-yo”, someone whose weight fluctuates a lot, and immediately begins to unsubtly obsess over everything she eats.

Both Cheryl (Cheryl Hines) and Susie (Susie Essman) are attending the wedding in “You’re Not Going To Get Me To Say Anything Bad About”, and neither they nor Jeff (Jeff Garlin) is willing to share their weights. Thus, they have to make an unscheduled stop at the pilot’s insistence and ditch some of their bags — Larry’s and Donna’s are the ones left behind, which facilitates most of the funny stuff in the rest of the episode.

Micky is, as described by Larry, a “whirlwind of smarm”, and Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 10, Episode 4 has a lot of fun testing the limits of Olyphant’s inherent likability. Thanks to the loss of their bags, Donna is worried about what she’s going to wear to the wedding, and Larry is worried that he won’t make a good first breath impression when they kiss due to the lack of a toothbrush. Thus, he sets out to find out, being rejected by Jeff and Susie, who have a much better room than he does, Leon, who also has a much better room than he does, and eventually Micky, who has not only a fabulous suite but a spare toothbrush — that he won’t lend Larry.

The only option, then, is to use Cheryl’s, since they were married and all, and while she lets him Ted chooses just that moment to arrive and surprise her. He’s greeted by Larry brushing his teeth in his bathroom. There’s an oddly specific pleasure in Ted Danson getting consistently tortured by Larry David that it’s difficult to adequately sum up. I don’t think I’ll ever get bored of it, and since Larry is so resistant to change, I doubt he will either.

Anyway, when he returns to his pathetic room with his freshly-brushed teeth, he discovers a chocolate stain on the couch and a tell-tale Toblerone wrapper in the bin — Donna has been snacking in his absence. He calls reception to tell them about the stain and is later informed by the cheery concierge that he’s being charged for the cleaning, which is so typical of him that it almost doesn’t register. He has to return to this guy and argue with him multiple times just for it to sink in that he’s one of the week’s adversaries in Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 10, Episode 4.

The latter half of “You’re Not Going To Get Me To Say Anything Bad About” gives Larry two objectives. Since the private plane’s pilot — or captain? — is insistent that Larry determines everyone’s weights, and nobody will tell him, the first is utilizing the services of a carnival act to guess them with a reasonable degree of accuracy (including Donna’s, which he slyly pays him to deduce.) The second is to figure out where the hotel is getting their very hush-hush proprietary coffee beans and smuggle them back Stateside. But in the meantime, there’s a wedding to deal with. Donna is able to borrow a dress from Susie, who has taken a shine to her after learning she’s Jewish, but chaos erupts when Ted confronts Larry about his affair with Cheryl, and the truth comes out. Ted attacks him and Larry uses Micky’s bride-to-be, Sasha (Kimberly Shannon Murphy), as a human shield, which goes about as well as you’d imagine.

Smuggling the coffee out also proves problematic, since, despite Larry smugly revealing everyone’s weights to the pilot, the beans still put them overweight. Larry is left behind with them — and a yo-yo, as a fitting reminder of why you don’t take your new flings on holiday with your ex-wife.
