Mum Susan is adamant with the town’s lady Sheriff that a search party for her missing daughter should be launched. However, the Sheriff and deputy seem reluctant. When they pop out for a conspiratorial chat, Susan overhears them plotting and tries to leave. The Sheriff explains that there’s no point in a search as they know what has happened to Amelia, then Susan is subdued by police officers.

It’s then that the weirdness really kicks into gear, as the Sheriff coughs up a small ball of twine, like a furball, and forces it into Susan’s mouth. It’s a very uncomfortable image and things only get worse as Susan grabs an ax and lashes out at the town’s law enforcement team.

Each blow reveals that under the skin, the townsfolk seem to be made of twine; there’s no blood, only string, and the wounded police officers are dispatched like scarecrows. As the Sheriff explains to Susan that she doesn’t understand what is happening and they would do “anything for their happiness”, Susan makes a break for it, but upon entering the street outside, an air raid klaxon is sounding and it seems that the locals are gathering, Susan grabs her ax and attacks, ending 50 States of Fright Episode 5.

Perhaps it’s just me, but the reveal of the twine people was very disconcerting and there are some very creepy moments here. With a genuine cliffhanger ending, I am ready for the final part of this story.
