Throughout Dark, the question has always remained — “What is the origin?”. Dark season 3 teases it out slowly, misleading viewers down one path but coming to a single conclusion. It seems Adam and Eva believe Martha’s (counterpart) unborn child is the origin due to the genetic crossing of both worlds, but that doesn’t turn out to be the case.

What is “the origin” in Dark season 3?

Before we explain what the origin is, it’s useful to have some context. The story of Tannhaus is fed to viewers in drips throughout the series. We learn in season 3 that when he learns of the death of his son, daughter-in-law, and grandchild after a fatal car accident, he desperately spent years making a time machine so he could see them again. His time travel machine inadvertently created two more worlds.

So Tannhaus’s world is the origin?

Yes, there are actually three worlds — the origin world is where Tannhaus created his time machine which birthed two worlds — that’s the original world. Most of the time, audiences assumed that the first world we grew accustomed to was the original world while the world Jonas ends up with the Martha counterpart is the other world. Both of these worlds are the product of an accident in the origin world.

Why is this important?

It’s important because knowing the origin means the characters can find a way to fix the vicious cycle, as we saw in the final ever episode of Dark. Click here to read the ending explained (will go live on the air date).
