Summary

The Making of Thor: Love and Thunder is the perfect companion to watch after checking out the film itself. It is so much fun and informative.

Disney+ documentary Marvel Studios Assembled: The Making of Thor: Love and Thunder was released on September 8, 2022.

Thor: Love and Thunder was a mixed bag for reviews, whether critics or audiences. However, I was a big fan of the film and thought it was a good time. I am excited to watch this because these “making of’s” are always cool. Although this will be my first venture down a Marvel “making of” series, I couldn’t have picked a better first film to watch.

The documentary opens with Chris Hemsworth’s screen test from 2009, trying out for the role of Thor. Kenneth Branaugh and some of the other creators talking about their search for Thor started with finding the actor, and they would build the physic next. You can’t help but see Hemsworth’s massive growth and passion for this character. From the shy young man on that screen test to the man we see talking with Taika about the things Thor should be doing now, you appreciate Hemsworth a little more seeing those things.

It doesn’t matter what sort of genre, whether it’s a comic book, if the people involved are passionate and good storytellers, it’s a transcended experience, and with Taika, you get that. – Christian Bale

One thing you hear over and over again throughout this documentary is the praise of Taika Waititi and his revolutionary work behind the camera. Waititi mentioned using “The Volume” on The Mandalorian and how it helped with working on that. So he brought that to Thor: Love and Thunder which was the first Marvel film to use the “The Volume,” a massive curved LED screen to create photorealistic backdrops surrounding the cast and crew throughout certain parts of the project. In this movie, they used it as a 360 set to bring this digital world to life these worlds that these actors could act against instead of using green screens. Honestly, this might have been my favorite part of the entire documentary because this was so cool.

The return of Natalie Portman was something I was looking forward to heading into Thor: Love and Thunder. I enjoyed what they did with Jane Foster’s character and brought it to life by being The Mighty Thor. It was amazing to hear the story of reeling Portman back into this world again and how she worked differently this time around to become a better version of Foster.

I loved this journey we took of learning, laughing, and understanding the making of this MASSIVE film. They don’t spare any details about the process, how hard it can be but also the good time that was had along the way with the cast and crew. Also, seeing Christian Bale talk about the film was a big plus.

Overall, I had a BLAST with The Making of Thor: Love and Thunder that has me wanting to go back and watch the rest of the behind-the-scenes documentaries on the Marvel films. It checks every box you could want as you laugh, learn things and get a raw look at the making of the film. I highly recommend checking this one out.
