Yes we have a Mulan Lead
In a world in which many lead actors and actresses in Hollywood seem to come from the same family tree, it is a breath of fresh air to see characters and story accurately represented by their corresponding race. Disney has been aware of their murky past in these matters and are taking the necessary steps toward correct representation in film, television, and digital media. Earlier this summer, Disney announced they casted Mena Massoud, an Egyptian and Arabian actor to star in their upcoming live-action Aladdin remake. The majority of the Lion King live-action retelling stars African Americans. So far, so good. Now it seems they are following the Massoud casting with another high profile casting announcement. Disney’s live-action Mulan now has a lead!
Who is it!?
Not to be outshined by the release of the new Avengers: Infinity War trailer, Liu Yifei has been cast as Far Mulan in the live-action retelling of Mulan coming in 2019. Yifei is well known in China as a model and singer, nicknamed “Crystal Liu”. She has appeared in The Forbidden Kingdom (2008) with Jackie Chan himself, and Outcast (2013) with Nicolas Cage. (Probably not a career highlight.) According to the Associated Press, Disney took over 1000 applicants and a year before they found Liu Yifei.
Disney, you are 3 for 3 and shooting 100% from the field. Don’t let us down.
