Alice Field
10 – John Wick Chapter 2
A showcase on how to deliver a sequel; no repetition, but a true expansion of the first film’s plot, the character and his world. And bloody exciting.
9 – The Florida Project
The innocence and imagination of children contrast beautifully with the stark circumstances of their lives. All the cast were a revelation.
8 – The Lego Batman Movie
Simply the best superhero film ever.
7 – The Forest of the Lost Souls
Very striking Portuguese black and white horror film about family and death. Stunning to look at and gripping to watch, too.
6 – Brigsby Bear
Hamill did voices! Again, a joyful and colourful film, with original characters and completely unpredictable story.
5 – Blade Runner 2049
A perfect sequel; clearly made by someone who loved the original as much as we did. The visual style and the soundtrack both matched the original closer than we could have hoped.
4 – Hounds of Love
Perfect acting and sublime filming; not to mention the aching commitment of a mother searching for her lost child.
3 – Baby Driver
A joyful, musical heist and coming of age story; with a fairy tale ending (in the tradition of The Graduate). Loved it, and I play the soundtrack often.
2 – Three Billboard Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Woody Harrelson made me cry. I never expected to say that. And I think I fell for Sam Rockwell a little.
1 – The Death of Stalin
I have immense respect for any writer that can have us laugh for most of the film and come close to throwing up for some of it. Nothing has had that effect until now since Man Bites Dog. Best historical satire since The Life of Brian.
