Most Anticipated Movies of 2018 Another year... another year. We seem to say this every time when January hits us, but what a great year of movies we have in front of us. A few of our critics have looked at the upcoming releases and they have each compiled together a list of what they are most excited for. Here are Ready Steady Cut's Most Anticipated Movies of 2018. (Use the buttons at the bottom of the page to navigate through the pages!). Tyler Howat 10 - Ready Player One Ernest Cline’s novel was one of my favorite books of 2011. Its sheer, audacious, geeky fun is second to none. So, when Steven Spielberg, the king of 80s nerd nostalgia, snagged the rights, I was in. I’m easily looking forward to this Matrix meets Stranger Things mashup more than just about anything else. 9 - A Wrinkle in Time The first in Madeleine L’Engle’s Time Quartet is just about as high in my childhood nostalgia as Star Trek, Star Wars, or anything Tolkien. There have been some subpar adaptations, but now that Ava DuVernay (Selma, 13th, Queen Sugar) has the reins, I’m eagerly awaiting this star-studded film. 8 - Avengers: Infinity War Speaking of star-studded, Infinity War will bring the whole of the Marvel Cinematic Universe together in a world-shattering battle with Thanos. The trailer broke the internet, and let us know that all this buildup has been worth it. 7 - Incredibles 2 Fourteen years after the Incredibles hit theatres, everyone’s favorite superfamily is back. I can’t wait to see what they’ll do. No matter what else it is, it’ll be fun! 6 - Black Panther The King of Wakanda (Chadwick Boseman) surprised us all in Marvel’s Civil War, and the promise of Michael B. Jordan as the bad guy, directed by Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station, Creed), is exactly what we’re looking for. 5 - Solo: A Star Wars Story Despite its production problems, I’m confident that Solo will be great. It’s got all the makings of greatness: Ron Howard, a Han Solo backstory, Donald Glover as Lando. What could go wrong? 4 - First Man After Whiplash and La La Land, I will watch Damien Chazelle direct anyone to read the phone book (that’s a thing, right?). In this case, he’s directing Ryan Gosling as Neil Armstrong, along with Claire Foy, Jon Bernthal, Kyle Chandler, and Corey Stoll, following the story of the first man on the Moon. 3 - Annihilation I really did not enjoy the novel on which this is based by Jeff VanderMeer, but this Natalie Portman-led sci-fi adventure film looks amazingly good, plus it’s helmed by writer-director Alex Garland (Ex Machina). It’s going to be beautiful, tense, and probably a little scary, and I can’t wait! 2 - Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom This selection will potentially put some people off, but I’m really excited for Jurassic World 2. I love this franchise (though I try not to think about Jurassic Park III too often...) for purely nostalgic reasons. I thought that Jurassic World wonderfully brought the potential foreshadowed (and torn down) in the original film to the 21st century, with all the hubris and promises of control and capitalism that goes with it. I’m excited to see where they’ll go with it. 1 - Fantastic Beasts 2: The Crimes of Grindelwald Once again: more backstory of the magical world of Harry Potter with Jude Law as Albus Dumbledore and Johnny Depp as Gallaert Grindelwald. I am there, no question. Alice Field 10 - Annihilation Recently listened to the audiobook (novel by Jeff Vandermeer) that this film was based on, and Alex Garland’s interpretation looks terrific. 9 - A Wrinkle in Time A 1960’s kids’ science fiction book, given very modern treatment? Hell yes! 8 - The Shape of Water I’ve loved everything I’ve seen of del Toro’s to date, and this fantastical period drama looks so atmospheric. 7 - Black Panther I’m very glad that my son will grow up used to seeing people of colour represented in many film and TV genres; not only represented, but this one looks exciting too! 6 - Insidious: The Last Key I enjoyed the other films in this series; keen to see how things are wrapped up. 5 - Deadpool 2 Deadpool gave us the best fun Valentine’s night out for years... how could I not look forward to the next. 4 - Alita: Battle Angel Those eyes! I don’t care how real she is! 3 - Halloween Jamie Lee Curtis. Enough said. 2 - Wreck-it Ralph 2 The plot of this sequel seems potentially very surreal for a kids’ film; and the first one was one of the best Disney films in recent years. (And I have great respect for the versatility of John C. Reilly.) 1 - Kaleidoscope Man Because I’ve supported this film since early in its crowd-funding, and my son and I have been extras in it. And the director is local. And the film is going to be so exciting! Oliver Buckley 5 - Solo: A Star Wars Story This has a real chance of being a bit of a mess. It's had some rather public issues, with the original directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller being replaced by Ron Howard well into production. This already feels like Disney are keen to play things safe. Ron Howard is a solid enough director, but he's hardly likely to do something dazzlingly different. But, it's a prequel about Han Solo, so it's very likely that I'm going to be first in line in May. I'm really looking forward to seeing Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo - he was one of the best things in Hail, Caesar! and he seems a perfect fit for the character. Throw in Donald Glover, complete with a mustache, as Lando Calrissian, and I think this might actually turn out to be a lot of fun. 4 - Avengers: Infinity War I think that this might just be on every single "Most Anticipated Movies of 2018" list. Let's face it, this is the big one, the culmination of 18 (EIGHTEEN!) Marvel movies. It can't be anything other than spectacular, can it? I think the only place that you will see more superheroes is probably on the floor of Comic-Con, but they won't be directed the Russo brothers. The Russos are responsible for Captain America: Winter Soldier (in my opinion, the finest Marvel movie to date) and they showed they can do big team-ups in Captain America: Civil War. I can't wait to see what they can do when they're given the keys to the full toy box. 3 - Early Man I love Aardman Animations and I really enjoyed last year's Shaun the Sheep movie. I think it's an underrated example of modern silent cinema. I maintain that The Pirates! is a fantastic animated movie and one of Hugh Grant's greatest performances so far. The latest film from the Aardman gang focuses on a tribe of cavemen as they try to save their village from the evil lord (Tom Hiddleston) of a Bronze Age City. 2 - Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Yes, we only just got a new Spider-Man movie last year, but this is going to be something very different. Instead of focusing on Peter Parker this, the first animated Spider-Man movie, is going to focus on Miles Morales, who is the Spider-Man from the Ultimate Marvel Universe, only now he's actually in the Prime Marvel Universe... it's complicated, alright? Needless to say, this is a brand new take on Spider-Man that we've never actually seen on the big screen. The film is being written and directed by Lord and Miller (of The Lego Movie, 21 Jump Street and being fired from the Han Solo movie fame) so I am expecting something, fun, energetic and exciting. 1 - Black Panther I think it's fairly apparent that I love superheroes, so it's probably no surprise that I'm looking forward to Ryan Coogler's take on Black Panther. The character (played by Chadwick Boseman) first debuted in Captain America: Civil War and he was a high point amongst a movie filled with high points. The trailer looks absolutely fantastic, with what seems to be a great balance of action and character development. I've wanted a movie to take us Wakanda for a long time and now after all these years, my wish is going to come true. Enjoyed reading this feature?
