The ITV mini-series comes to a conclusive end with Cheat Episode 4, after tantalising us with a story of paranoia and revenge. After the murder of Adam (Tom Goodman-Hill), the series finally reaches the police investigation. Leah (Katherine Kelly) is having to defend herself to an intense degree, with all the circumstantial evidence pointing at her. The entire night leading to Adam’s death works in Rose’s (Molly Windsor) favour it seems, plus she has Ben’s (Burn Gorman) testament as a handy alibi. When Rose is interviewed, she spins a story that she and Adam were having an affair, planting a motive for Leah to kill him. When the police show Leah the CCTV of Rose and Adam kissing each other in the corridor, they ask her if she has a solicitor.

Rose has her difficulties with her step-father, asking him for money so she could go away – but his feelings for her have become disconnected, explaining he wishes for her to rot. Cheat Episode 4 provides Leah’s lowest point; needing a solicitor, her best friend doubting her and evidence all pointing at her. The only thing going for her is one of the investigators seems to have an eye on Ben regarding the phone call. Leah decides to confront Rose directly, asking her to tell the police what indeed happened that night. In an odd moment, which I didn’t see coming, Rose says “I’m your sister, and I love you” stating she wishes it could be different.

Cheat Episode 4 Recap

At that moment, the police surround the campus, and Leah confidently believes they are going to arrest Rose. But they don’t, they capture her instead. One of the investigators is still convinced there is more to this story, finding Leah’s actual engagement ring that caused her to attack Rose in episode two. The forensic scientist also says some of the other knife wounds look a little “off”, believing it is possibly another match to another murder weapon, making them wonder if there are fingerprints elsewhere. But the lead investigator ignores calls for more data and charges Leah officially for murder, considering they can only find her and Adam’s fingerprints.

But there is a pivotal moment to Cheat Episode 4 where Rose’s luck finally runs out. Michael is desperate to save Leah, so arranges a meeting with Rose, and discusses her childhood and he explains how guilty he felt for not raising her. By bringing back all the emotions, he manages to get her to confess to the murder of Adam, unaware that he was recording the entire conversation. The police swoop around the corner and arrest her.

The closure of Cheat Episode 4 fast forwards two years, with the campus celebrating Adam’s achievements and Leah wanting to speak to Rose in prison, who is three months away from release. She wants to know what Rose said to be strangled. Rose gives her a new story; that Adam barely strangled her, and that she murdered him to do her sister a favour. Leah is devastated, telling Rose she never wants anything to do with her ever again and that she wishes her to find life outside of prison.

The episode reaches the end with Rose writing a letter to Leah, explaining she has found a new lease of life. As this part is narrated, Ben is seen in the woods, about to murder the father who raised her.
