When a mild-mannered Uber driver named Stu (Kumail Nanjiani) picks up a passenger (Dave Bautista) who turns out to be a cop hot on the trail of a brutal killer, he’s thrust into a harrowing ordeal where he desperately tries to hold onto his wits, his life and his five-star rating. Directed by Michael Dowse, this action-comedy from 20th Century Fox also stars Iko Uwais, Natalie Morales, Betty Gilpin, Jimmy Tatro, Mira Sorvino and Karen Gillan.
That’s quite a generic premise, but props for securing the services of Karen Gillan to add to the comedy.
Here is the trailer:
As you can see from Stuber trailer 1, Stu is minding his own business, doing his usual Uber shift when the cop takes over his journeys, requiring his help. The comedy barely shines through in the trailer though, but with both stars prone to implementing gags into their roles, you can expect a lot of laughs from a potentially explosive movie.
It’s worth adding that early Rotten Tomatoes ratings have it down to 57%, which is quite poor in terms of the scoring system in today’s aggressive aggregator, but there is not an audience score yet, which is usually considerably higher for this type of genre. Website Hollywood Reporter is affirmative, stating, “A riotous retro pairing of serious violence and serious laughs”, however, website Roger Ebert has marked obvious problems by saying “The team does not have the screenplay to match what the cast is giving to it”.
What do you think to Stuber trailer 1? Do you think it’s worth a chance?
