Fresh from selling half her wardrobe, Lyn is still coming up with bright ideas to make money. Her latest is selling the junk in Vida’s apartment, which Emma can’t believe people will buy. Turns out there’s a market for crap, but it’s probably a less expedient means of income than renting out the apartment of the dude who died in the previous episode, which Emma wants to get on with quickly — insensitively so, but then again that’s Emma.
Eddy and Lyn would like to see more compassion over the loss of Dead Dude — my bad, I didn’t catch his name. But Eddy isn’t in much of a condition to deal with anything right now; still laid up in bed after fleeing the hospital, her only entertainment is Lyn reading aloud Dead Dude’s correspondence, partially against Eddy’s wishes.
And that’s before Eddy pees the bed. This brief moment of embarrassment is actually pretty important to Vida Season 2 Episode 2, since it helps to highlight how Eddy views Emma; when Lyn is unable to lift her out of bed and requires help to do so, all Eddy cares about is that Emma doesn’t see her weakness. Stuck for options, who else does Lyn call but Johnny. Seriously, does she know anybody else in the neighborhood?
No matter. Elsewhere in Vida Season 2 Episode 2, Emma is hiring a handyman, an initially testy new character called Baco (Raúl Castillo) whom she clashes with immediately. Once again the idea resurfaces that, in leaving the neighborhood, Emma abandoned part of her Latina identity, which she has been resisting since the first episode of the first season. Expect more from this relationship.
Things aren’t going well for Marisol, either. Fired from work, she devotes her efforts to her faintly tedious activism, and she’s manipulated once again by Tlaloc, thus proving that for all her anti-establishment bluster, she’s still just a vulnerable young girl in need of guidance. And she isn’t getting it from him — although she is getting other things.
Vida Season 2 Episode 2 also represents something of a turning point for Emma and Lyn’s relationship, as they start to learn how to compromise better and see what they have in common, rather than focusing on what makes them different. For one thing, Lyn makes money from selling the junk, as she said she would; for another, they both send off Dead Dude together, in a low-key but heartfelt little ceremony.
At the end of the half-hour, Emma redirects a question that was put to her at the beginning of the episode back at Lyn. It was initially Emma’s girlfriend who raised the topic of what they might do in the event of a zombie apocalypse, suggesting that she’d keep Emma in the basement and feed her roadkill until they find a cure — an idea that Emma was horrified by. But Lyn’s response is the same as hers: She’d put her out of her misery. Sisters until the end.
