Summary

Abyss Season 1, Episode 7 was not the worst chapter in the story so far, but its littered with too many twists and turns, thinking it’s cleverer than it actually is.

The last thing I wanted to do today with a ravaging hangover, an upset stomach and dodgy Jägerbomb breath is to recap Abyss episode 7. As I continued to witness this absurd story, my heavy eyes drooping at the bright screen, and the odd flashback of spending money I don’t have in Popworld, I wondered what the hell I am doing with my life. Abyss has become the metaphor of my life; building a website with alcohol in my blood, believing eventually it will be a story to tell my grandchildren about; but the issue is, this is not a good story. I should be in bed, and I hate Abyss.

But the show must go on, and for some reason, this Korean Netflix series continues to ride the choppy waters, embarrassingly keeping its thumbnail intact on the streaming platform, in the hope it will secure a fanbase. Abyss episode 7 confirms to me that the show writers believe this a good story as it continues to add in twist after twist, believing in its smart swerves.

So serial killer Yeon-cheol is securely in police custody now, but Se-Yeon (Bo-Young Park) wants to understand more answers; she wants to know what happened to her last night when she was murdered – did Yeon-cheol act alone? Was Cha Min (Hyo-Seop Ahn) in on the murder? (Surely not.) Amongst trying to persuade Hee-Jin to record him at the prison to get answers after learning that she is the daughter of the evil man, she foolishly gives Dong-Cheol hope that she will get into a relationship with him (remember, he believes she is someone else).

The prison scene between Hee-Jin and Yeon-cheol was strange; the serial killer wanted his daughter to join him on his mission to kill more people. His over-the-top villainy barely computes in the story.

Oh, by the way, no-one is bothered that they can bring each other back to life with a ball anymore. That plot device stopped moving the characters around episode 3. When Hee-Jin visits Yeon-cheol, she learns of the condition of her mother, and desperately wants to save her before the serial killer’s unknown accomplice kills her. Abyss episode 7 sees Se-Yeon, Hee-Jin and Cha Min working together to dig deeper into their crazy scenario.

Once they figure out where the care home is, Abyss episode 7 moves closer to understand who the accomplice is. Unfortunately, when they get there, Hee-Jin’s mother’s bed is empty. The next scene shows Prosecutor Seo in the car with Hee-Jin’s mother, piling on the evidence that he is the accomplice.
