The Chosen One Episode 2, “Science’s Faith” offers a flurry of questions that are not answered, leaving intrigue for the later chapters.

This recap for Netflix’s The Chosen One Season 1, Episode 2, “Science’s Faith”, contains significant spoilers. We have provided extensive coverage on the thriller, and you can read the recap of the previous episode by clicking these words.

The Chosen One season 1, episode 2, “Science’s Faith” asks the fundamental questions about the doctors’ own beliefs. The Netflix series slyly reminds me of Lost in some capacity with this ‘us and them’ mentality in a hazy jungle environment. Episode 2 starts with Lúcia Santeiro (Paloma Bernardi) demanding that Doctor Lorenzo (Kiko Vianello) helps Mateus (Mariano Mattos Martins), who, at this point, is bleeding out. Doctor Lorenzo refuses to take orders, and Mateus is swiftly removed from the premises, leaving Lúcia in despair.

With Lúcia confused by the events unfolding, Damião Almeida (Pedro Caetano) ventures out on the river to try and find Mateus, while Enzo Vergani (Gutto Szuster) and Lúcia remain at the village in case the ordeal is a ploy. Damião is conveniently left in the jungle, where he is assaulted by the lady in the white dress who insists he must go. Episode 2, “Science’s Faith” offers many questions so far, but encases all the answers.

The Chosen One provides the first reveal that plants doubt into the minds of the audience; Mateus returns, seemingly healed, but Enzo believes this is a trick, and Lúcia is beginning to question her belief system. Mateus tries to stop the village from taking the vaccines, but with the military police on-site, the treatments begin regardless.

Going back to my original theory regarding episode 2, that the whole purpose of this chapter is to allow the doctors to question their own beliefs, “Science’s Faith” sees villagers who have taken the vaccine suddenly have seizures, frothing from the mouth. The older woman that keeps appearing maintains that it is all lies the experiences the doctors are facing.

Like episode 1, The Chosen One offers the audience more flashbacks; this time, we learn of Damião’s upbringing, confronting an abusive father that did not believe in him. Like the previous chapter, these flashbacks are randomly slotted in and disrupt the flow slightly. Damião wakes up with the lady in the white dress, ordering him to leave before it is too late. She claims to be The Chosen One’s life, forcing another question that needs answering.

Back at the village, Zulmira offers to take Lúcia and Enzo to Damião but swiftly abandons them, randomly bumping into Silvino, the man with the boat, who is requiring help for his wife. Meanwhile, The Chosen One, “Science’s Faith” sees Damião witnessing the cult for the first time, with a weird tribal performance unraveling before his eyes.

The Chosen One season 1, episode 2, “Science’s Faith” ends with Lúcia and Enzo finally finding Damião and they find him in a bad place; high fever and a low chance of surviving. We see Lúcia’s faith in science break for the first time as she implies she wants a miracle from Mateus. She decides to take it into her own hands, entering the Chosen One’s camp, demanding help. Santiago (Lourinelson Vladmir) wants to kill them for entering a sacred place, but Mateus calms the tensions. The Chosen One (Ricardo Félix Rojas) comes to the fray, meeting the characters directly for the first time.

As a side note, another village did visit Mateus in “Science’s Faith” asking for The Chosen One as the plague has hit their community, but Mateus refuses to help. This may have repercussions later.
