There’s no wonder that treasure hunters in film and TV always turn out the same — has there ever been one who didn’t have dysfunctional parents? Thus far, we’ve had to endure altogether too much bellyaching about how Lexi’s father was a member of the enigmatic Brotherhood of Serapis. In “The Lunchbox of Destiny”, we meet Danny’s estranged, notorious dirty-cop-turned-master-thief father, Patrick, who had left the FBI chasing their tails for years after nabbing ten priceless paintings and never saying a word about where they were. Guess what we’re looking for in Blood & Treasure Episode 8?
This is all part of another useful coincidence since Danny and Lexi are facing serious jail time, but the FBI wants to use Danny to convince Patrick, who’s now dying, to open up about the location of the paintings. Lexi, still in the doghouse for being sly, is brought along as an expert to verify their authenticity. After a brief jaunt to a Boston prison where codes are exchanged, Danny heads back to his childhood home.
Predictably, Danny’s childhood was complicated and fraught with trauma that “The Lunchbox of Destiny” isn’t particularly interested in exploring. He was raised by his mother, then his mother got sick and died, so he went to live with his father; his father didn’t want reminders of his ex floating around the house, so Danny kept a secret box of mementos. That’s what we’re looking for in Blood & Treasure Episode 8 — and of course, it yields a clue.
That clue is the name of a double-crossing former friend of Patrick’s who was in on the heist. It also becomes clear that Danny was the one who ratted Patrick out to the police back in the day; the perennial do-gooder had to work double-hard for the FBI just to convince them that he wasn’t crooked like his old man. We are deep into the genre playbook at this point, and that’s before Danny and Lexi travel to the lush climes of Havana, Cuba, in search of the paintings.
As it turns out, only one of them was sold: The one related to Cleopatra, obviously. That’s why Farouk’s men are after the paintings now, unaware that the one they need is missing; the rest are retrieved by Danny and Lexi, which lets them off the hook with the FBI, and free to track down the mysterious buyer who acquired the missing artwork. “The Lunchbox of Destiny” finds a mostly happy ending. Patrick is moved to a proper hospital. He and Danny begin to understand each other a little better, as do Danny and Lexi, the latter of whom admits that Fabi is her Brotherhood contact. The last-minute problem is that Danny already gave his number to Gwen. As Blood & Treasure Episode 8 ends, she traces it, figuring out that Fabi is a double agent. Drama!
