Following up on my selection of actors to play Whistler, it is time to look for the person behind the camera, Disney and Marvel have never been afraid of picking popular directors ready to step up to a big-budget film, so with this selection I will be giving a mix of the biggest names in action and horror, along with the directors who I feel deserve a chance with a big-budget film. I will also not be including any director that is involved in the Marvel Cinematic Universe or the directors of the original Blade trilogy.
1: Chad Stahelski
Chad Stahelski is the man behind the John Wick Trilogy, arguably the best modern action trilogy in cinema. Chad would bring the intense fighting style to the picture and his background in stunt work would see him look to bring back an edgy side to Blade, which will give the film the unique style required to bring in the new audience. He might even be able to bring Keanu Reeves into the film, maybe in a villainous role, but this is for a different list and could work with David Leitch once again.
2: The Soska Sisters
Jen and Sylvia Soska have been making names for themselves in the horror scene for years, with American Mary being one of their standout films. They are about to release Rabid, a remake of the David Cronenberg classic. Where the twins could get a huge advantage in this process would come from their passion for horror as well as the fact they have worked on Marvel-related comics in the recent years, giving them a chance to get involved in the world, which would see them bring enough Blade references to life, the ones that fans will enjoy.
3: Barry Jenkins
Barry Jenkins is the Oscar-winning director who bought us Moonlight and If Beale Street Could Talk. He is a director that has generally found stories he wants to tell, giving us wonderful character studies in what he has made. He could bring a new direction to Blade, one that makes him feel grounded, which is something that will make it different from the other films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
4: Jordan Peele
Jordan Peele has given us two of the best modern horror movies in Get Out and Us. Jordan has been able to bring us unique characters which will easily be remembered for years; sure, Blade is already well known, but one of the important factors will be to make him different to the Wesley Snipes version. Jordan can bring moments of comedy which will keep the film feeling entertaining. People have been calling for Jordan to get a major movie project, which will give him a chance here to continue his rising star power behind the camera.
5: Sam Raimi
Sam Raimi has bought us some of the best horrors in his career, be it the original Evil Dead trilogy or more recently Drag me to Hell. Sam has also worked on a major comic book trilogy before with the Spider-Man films in the early 2000s. Sam has tried his hand at more fantasy based movies, but we know his best work can come from the horror world, which Blade is rooted in. Of the directors that I have picked Sam is easily the one with the most experience and is one that I feel needs to make a comeback as he hasn’t directed a film since 2015.
6: Aneesh Chaganty
Aneesh Chaganty bought us one of the most popular movies of 2018 in Searching, which showed us a unique way to shoot a movie which kept the intensity of the film feeling non-stop. This could well be a leap too far, as Aneesh hasn’t had the chance to reach the next step of his career, but with Run in post-production, you never know where his reputation will be after its release. This choice would also continue to show that Marvel will give directors a chance to step up.
7: Justin Lin
Justin Lin has been the heart & soul behind the rise to power of the Fast & Furious franchise with his work behind the camera bringing the main cast back together in Fast & Furious and then breathing new life into the franchise with Fast 5 and Fast & Furious 6, with the franchise easily hitting a billion dollars a film. Justin did step into the Star Trek universe with Star Trek Beyond too. Justin knows how to work with major studios, and has a reputation for being able to handle action too, which Blade would need to make it stand out in a different light to the rest of the franchise.
8: Fede Alvarez
Fede Alvarez has been working in horror, with his remake of Evil Dead being popular within the community, Don’t Breathe shocking the audience with its twisted plot, and The Girl in the Spider’s Web being a bit of a miss. Fede could remain in the horror roots with Blade and also give the film a darker, more atmospheric experience. We would have a smaller body count but we could get one of the most gore-heavy Marvel films to date with his work with special effects teams.
9: Ana Lily Amirpour
Ana Lily Amirpour burst onto the scene with the excellent A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, one of the best vampire movies of the last decade. She followed this up with The Bad Batch which was also a lot of fun and proved that she could bring A-list actors into a small movie with the likes of Keanu Reeves, Jim Carrey and Jason Momoa starring in this one. Ana will bring her own style to this movie which could include moments of black and white, which would make Blade standout from the rest of the crowd, and using her abilities to build up tension would only help Blade get a more horror vibe through the film.
Who would you like to see as the director of the new Blade movie?
