What an introduction to the finale of Season 3: A “Dear Black People” intro — it’s an alternative universe where Flavor Flav is the President, demanding to build a wall between the USA and Canada and white people feel like they have to fight for their culture. Episode 10 did the peak Dear White People satirical scenario, and it worked. It was an extract of Brooke’s article in the new magazine, showing the skewed events surrounding Moses Brown — it’s a reality-breaker, highlighting how the truth has been avoided due to an agenda.

A lot happened in such a short space of time in Episode 10, so let me break it down.

With Season 3 showing Samantha often procrastinating, she finally holds a viewing for her short film. It’s well-received, with the character finally getting over a hill to get it complete. At the viewing, Rashid returns and shows off his new girlfriend, with Joelle feeling slightly jealous on the sidelines — it may not be over for her and Reggie though, as later in the episode they make up over the fall-out over Moses Brown.

Episode 10 served the cold truths for Reggie; the revelations severely break his admiration for Moses Brown due to Muffy’s experiences. He approaches the professor about it, but Brown claims the entire night was consensual and “they” are doing whatever it takes to bring him down — Reggie, realizing how deep he has ended up in Brown’s influence, walks away for good. This may have saved his relationship with Joelle.

Samantha and Lionel decide to talk to The Watcher of The Order, now known as Mr. Ruskin. They learn the truth about The Order; how influential black people run the “Black Illuminati”, silencing those who try to dismantle a powerful Black figure. This is all linked to Moses Brown, and how he has people in high places likely to threaten Muffy if she speaks directly. Samantha and Lionel realize they have to “kill the narrator” to reveal the reality of the situation. As they walk away from Ruskin, he seriously tells them not to tell anyone about The Order, or they will be killed. They both walk away laughing.

As Dear White People Season 3, Episode 10 ends, the group talks about the debut article, and how they have felt since they’ve heard about Moses Brown — Reggie admits that what happened “was not okay” and apologizes to Muffy. This was a very thought-provoking episode, highlighting that we should never allow the narrative to excuse tragic events, like the one that happened to Muffy.

Before the end credits, Troy approaches Samantha and Lionel, puts a gold-looking coin down, and says, “we need to talk”. We can only assume he is on about The Order.

Winchester’s Observations

  • Troy’s father has close ties to The Order.
  • Coco didn’t get the scholarship, even with her recommendation.
  • Lionel finally finds someone he can be with.
