Episode 3 was a slight improvement, mostly because it tied Jessica’s (Gina Torres) issues that deeply impacted her family, adding that emotional engagement.

Jessica goes head to head with Pat McGann who has been asked to select an appointee for the alderman. He chooses Betsy Sullivan, and Jessica immediately requests the services of Yoli to do her due diligence. Predictably, Jessica rejects Pat’s appointee; she does not serve the best interest for the area accusing her of being racist and out of touch.

“The Union Leader” is attempting to put two enemies in a crossfire, and it works, because of what Pat does to her family. He expedites their eviction notice.

As for Bobby Golec (Morgan Spector), he has suddenly gone AWOL, sending Keri Allen (Bethany Joy Lenz) into a professional frenzy, always asking Derek where he is and why. Keri learns Bobby is spending time with his kids, and you can tell this makes her even more uncomfortable. When she is giving a speech to students about her career and her apparent non-existent love life, one of the teenagers compliments her for showing genuine integrity.

This moment is pivotal for the character as Keri wants someone who can commit to her 100% and not go home to their wife every night. She bravely goes to Bobby’s house and learns that his wife has collapsed again — she has MS. With that news, Keri couldn’t make the situation about her.

Jessica spends the rest of Episode 3 trying to give her family back the 90-day eviction, which involved having an uncomfortable talk with the Union Leader, basically bribing him on behalf of Pat to cut a deal.

I think “The Union Leader” offered an absolute reality for Jessica; she’s not in a flashy law firm anymore, and in this world, it’s difficult not to flirt with those who are corrupt to make things happen. She’s conflicted with her direction in Episode 3, even calling Jeff and leaving a heartfelt voicemail.

At the end of Pearson Season 1, Episode 3, “The Union Leader”, Jessica manages to bribe the Union Leader successfully, but you can tell it went against her principles — but after all, she has to look after her family and at the same time, ensure the community is best served.

As the episode closes, it shows the bunch of polaroid photos on the wall showing the Mayor, Jessica, and other staff members. As the camera zooms out, it reveals an FBI office. Is Jessica in trouble with the FBI?

Audit Records

  • Nick agrees to chauffeur Jessica. It’s challenging to gauge whose side he is on.
  • Derek and Yoli flirt every single time they are in a scene together; Pearson is creating a Mike and Rachel.
