Jessica (Gina Torres) has decided to delve further into her Chicago acquaintances in Episode 4. It almost felt neo-noir, as the ex-lawyer navigates the city with a magnifying glass. Jeff is still concerned with Jessica’s intentions.
I don’t understand the whole “Jeff” situation — if he were majorly concerned, surely he’d make an appearance rather than leaving her in danger. “The Deputy Mayor” attempts to strike up their romance again, but it’s unconvincing.
With Bobby AWOL to attend to his wife, the Deputy Mayor stands in and immediately makes demands, much to the dislike of Keri. The Deputy Mayor wants a street named after Fred Hampton, a man who changed people’s lives but was a part of the Black Panther Party. Rather than stand up to him, Keri asks Derek to sweeten him up and make him believe he will be getting his way.
Jessica’s main objective in Episode 4 is to look into the murder of Carl Jeffries in North Park. Keri speaks to Pat McGann after learning this, who denies all knowledge but prompts him to confront Nick. We learn that Nick paid off Carl Jeffries to stop his lawsuit; soon after, he was murdered.
Episode 4 points the finger at Nick for a short while, but he’s convincing enough to persuade Jessica that he may not have been involved in his murder. Jessica, with the help of Angela, ends up meeting Dawson in a rough part of Chicago to gain more information but fails. Jessica is doing everything she can in Episode 4, but she continues to meet dead ends while Pat and Nick try to solve the moving parts, so they are scot-free.
As Pearson Season 1, Episode 4, “The Deputy Mayor” closes, Jessica goes to church with her family and Patt McGann reveals he is under pressure to make progress with North Park from the Real Estate Developer.
The question remains: who was really responsible for the murder of Carl? Was it Nick? I’m sure more twists are forthcoming.
- Yoli tells Derek it is cruel to trick the Deputy Mayor and asks him to stand up for himself.
