Summary
GLOW Season 3, Episode 6, “Outward Bound” is a middle of the road chapter, but it does give the opportunity for the characters to express some truths.
Why is it that camping brings out the best of a group of people? With the characters at odds so far in Season 3, “Outward Bound” was the chance for the wrestlers to let their hair down and drive home some truths. Episode 6 was all about soul searching and revelations. At the same time, it felt like a filler episode too, straight after Bash’s aggressive stance regarding the show.
While most of the group stay behind at the camp in “Outward Bound”, Debbie and Ruth venture out with a couple of others. It was a disaster — hiking is not their skillset and they soon find themselves lost. This is an opportunity for the two to have a deep conversation with the night young; Ruth explains her situation with Sam, but also noteworthily expresses her love for him. With Debbie on the verge of leaving, Ruth provides sound advice — bring the kid to Vegas.
Back at the camp, Melrose tells Jewish stories next to the fire, getting the group in high spirits — well, apart from Jenny, who was offended at the role switch in the previous episode. There has been tension between them all episode. Jenny opens up about the threat of genocide in her family, and how lucky she is to be alive today. The moment encouraged Melrose to apologize, and the women embrace. It’s not all sunshine and rainbows though, as Arthie tells Yolanda that she is not sure what her sexuality is, prompting Yolanda to blurt that she does not want a straight woman.
Near the end of Episode 6, Sheila returns from the hike after collapsing from dehydration, she throws her wig and main outfit into the fire; she tells the group that she wants to explore more, and not be stuck to the same person. In the final scene, Ruth visits Sam’s hotel room to learn that he is not there — he has checked out.
GLOW Season 3, Episode 6, “Outward Bound” brings a sense of communion to the group of characters, but overall, it is a weaker episode in the third season.
