This recap of Netflix’s GLOW Season 3, Episode 9, “The Libertines” contains significant spoilers. You can read the recap of the previous episode by clicking these words.

“The Libertines” was an episode of highs and lows, and a predictable twist for good measure.

Ruth has been blatantly bored of wrestling since GLOW hit 50 shows, and Sam has offered her a career lifeline; an audition. She heads out to LA and delivers her audition to Sam, Justine and the Casting Director. They all look impressed. Later on, Sam and Ruth head out for a drink, and it finally happens — Ruth lands the truth bomb that she’s in love with Sam, and they kiss and giggle like teenagers, and suggest they go home together. The hammer blow arrives for Ruth as Sam makes her aware that she did not get the role.

I was disappointed in Ruth at this moment; Episode 9 shows the character relying on Sam to save her mid-life crisis and career. She suggests Sam is a sleazy Hollywood director who is trying to sleep with her. Their story ends in “The Libertines” at this point, but this will surely resume in the finale.

The predictable twist was Rhonda and Bash; Episode 9 sees Rhonda desperate to rekindle Bash’s interest in her sexually. She asks Melrose if she can think of a plan to help to make Bash jealous. They decide to plant a situation where a man is in her apartment getting cosy with Rhonda. The scenario turns weird; the man pretends to be a plumber but is looking cosy next to Rhonda — Bash senses the scenario and tells them to kiss and touch each other, before encouraging a threesome.

Bash reaches the peak of his own story here in “The Libertines” — he touches the man just as much as Rhonda, highlighting how he has kept himself suppressed from his sexuality for a long time. Rhonda seems happy at the arrangement at the time, and they may continue their marriage in this vein.

To the focal point of Episode 9, which is the show The Libertines. Debbie helps Bobby take the Libertine Ball to the next level. The show is a massive success; Sheila does an incredible monologue, Sandy comes on stage with a peacock costume, and Tex surprisingly donates to the charity. But the show ends in a distressing manner — someone starts a fire, and as everyone leaves, there is homophobic graffiti sprayed everywhere outside the building.

This was a disheartening ending for GLOW Season 3, Episode 9, “The Libertines”, highlighting how the LGTBQ+ community was treated during this time. What makes it more horrifying is that still happens today, making the differences in decades feel somewhat uncanny.

  • The tension between Arthie and Yolanda is at its peak in “The Libertines”, but at the end, Arthie sees the abuse aimed at the community, and it could be at this moment, she understands who she is.
