Episode 5 looks at Keri Allen (Bethany Joy Lenz) — shooting back five years when Keri met Alderman Bobby Golec, with sparks flying instantly. In the present day, she’s awkwardly kicking out her “one night stand” who is trying to add layers to a nothing-night.
Pearson recognizes that Keri is equally as compelling a character as Jessica. Let’s not forget, this woman managed to take Jessica down.
“The Former City Attorney” centers on the past coming back to haunt Keri. The former Attorney is trying to sue Chicago; Keri is the reason he was fired after she found that he was cheating people out of liabilities — sometimes children. Keri is lost in Episode 5; in one hand she wants to ensure this man does not win the case, but on the other hand, she wants to make sure Bobby is not brought into the mix; the Mayor has just returned from caring for his wife who is suffering from a chronic disease. Keri asks Jessica for support.
More back story is thrown at the audience in Episode 5; we learn that Bobby always dreamed of being the “new kind” of Mayor — a politician that fought against injustices and not the Mayor that he is now, shackled by corrupt acquaintances. His past reveals he had many arguments with Pat McGann. In a shocking reveal, Pat tells Bobby that he made a deal with his father to get rid of the Union boss and make Bobby Mayor. Bobby was destined to be a leader either way.
The most interesting part of Episode 5 is when Jessica offers to do a trial deposition with Keri. Like we witness in Suits with these fake scenarios, Jessica is too hot to handle, and Keri walks out. A drunk Keri tells Jessica later that evening that she’s afraid the jury will believe she became an attorney by sleeping with the man that became Mayor — and confesses to still sleeping with Bobby now. The flashbacks reveal that after sleeping with Keri, he put forward the complaint against the former city Attorney.
We get our first taste of a series crossover: Jessica rings Harvey and asks for help. Harvey manages to find a position in New York for the former attorney where he can build a new reputation, stopping him from putting a suit against Chicago. Pearson Season 1, Episode 5, “The Former City Attorney” is a good chapter.
An important question: with Jessica ringing Harvey, will we see more crossovers between Suits and Pearson in future chapters to come?
