They are going to make us wait until the 13th episode of Season 3 to answer the only question the series has asked: who killed Bryce?

Episode 12 begins with Clay trying to flee, but before he does, he visits Ani. She kisses him in an emotional goodbye, but as he is about to embark on a journey, making himself look even more guilty, Tyler rings him asking if he can be at the joint-assembly.

The joint-assembly was well directed; Jessica makes a speech to both schools — Liberty and Hillcrest –about suffering, wounds and survivors of sexual violence. She asks for every survivor to stand up in the audience. Tyler stands up bravely once he sees that Clay is there, but surprisingly, Justin stands up too.

After the assembly, Clay is arrested, making him the worst runaway the world has ever seen. Clay accuses the police that they decided it was him from the start. This spurs a revealing flashback of Clay catching Ani kissing Bryce before the Homecoming. On the field, he tries to fight Bryce but loses him in the crowd.

Clay being the main suspect is laughable really, because there’s no way he’d beat Bryce in a fight, which Episode 12 proves.

And then, just out of nowhere, Zach tells Alex that he killed Bryce and that he feels guilty that Clay is going to jail.

I could not believe it at first because it was woefully random. Zach goes to the police station and tells his story; Chloe came to visit him that night to watch the game, and Bryce found out that he supported her through the abortion. In the match, they exchanged a war of words, and during the fight, Bryce intentionally broke Zach’s knee.

After the game, Zach finds Bryce at the pier, and he ends up in another fight, but this time, he breaks one of Bryce’s arms and legs, and leaves him on the ground and drives off. The police only see this as assault and battery and explain to Zach that Bryce’s lungs were full of water. Zach did not murder Bryce, and someone else came to the pier after.

13 Reasons Why Season 3, Episode 12, “And Then the Hurricane Hit” ends with Tyler filing a report on his sexual assault, resulting in Monty getting arrested. Ani confesses to Jessica that she slept with Bryce. We see the trainers of Bryce’s killer, but Netflix couldn’t help themselves — the answer is in the finale.
