Summary

Carnival Row Season 1, Episode 8, “The World to Come”, The Finale, presents some cold truths for the characters to end the Amazon Prime series.

We recap the Prime Video Series Carnival Row Season 1 Episode 8, “The Gloaming,” which contains spoilers and explains the Ending.

Carnival Row has always been about a divided city split by humans and creatures, metaphorically highlighting modern society and the restrictive behavior against immigrants. Episode 8 becomes the peak of what The Burgue is — a city that deserves very little.

Carnival Row Season 1 Episode 8 Recap

We learn that Absalom Breakspear (Jared Harris) is Philo’s father, and he and Philo (Orlando Bloom) discuss how he met her. He abandoned Aisling due to societal pressures, but he never imagined it would come to this.

And the entire situation between Jonah and Sophie becomes murky, very murky. Jonah tells his mother Piety that he knows the truth about the kidnapping — she hits him back with a killer line: Sophie, the woman he has been sleeping with, conjuring political plans, is his sister. What makes it weirder is that Sophie knew, and tries to convince Jonah to join her anyway, to become a “force to be reckoned with”.

As for Agreus and Imogen, Episode 8 sees the newly formed couple with a decision to make. With Agreus’ staff sniffy about the ordeal, and Imogen’s brother Ezra suspicious of their relationship, Imogen lets her entire feelings for Agreus spill out. Her brother watches from outside as the two take it to the bedroom. He threatens them with a gun, but Imogen saves Agreus, and they flee. “The World to Come” presents hard choices for our characters

The turn of events in the Season 1 finale occurs when a Puck stabs Absalom, severely wounding him. Jonah approaches his father in his bed and makes him aware that he knows his secrets, before walking off. Meanwhile, the Haruspex is attacked, and Philo goes to visit her. She speaks of the Chancellor’s wife — she is the one that created the Darkasha and the one he loves, Vignette (Cara Delevingne), will now be in grave danger.

While this is happening, the scenes alternate — Piety approaches Absalom demanding that he tell her who the half-fae is. He is too consumed by the confusion over his son to provide a legitimate answer, so Piety kills him, taking his liver in the process. Piety sees the order he signed, to free Vignette, a promise Absalom made to Philo.

Piety takes Vignette to the sewers. Piety wants to know where the half-fae is and threatens to cut Vignette open if she does not speak. In good timing, Philo fights the Darkasha and chops it in half. But that is not enough, as the Darkasha rises again, this time, fully controlled by Piety and continues to attack Philo. Vignette kills Piety after freeing herself, which in turn kills the Darkasha.

Carnival Row Season 1 Ending Explained

Carnival Row Season 1 ends with the city segregated between human and non-humans after the attack on Absalom by the Puck, deemed to be part of a more extensive organization. No creature is allowed to leave or enter. Agreus and Imogen are already sailing out when they hear the order, but they ignore it. The new Chancellor Jonah decides to accept Sophie’s deal and form a unified government. In a moment of clarity, Philo tells the City police that he is a critch in order to enter the segregated area and join the one he loves — Vignette.
