Episode 2 of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance plays out the beginnings of hard-fought adventures. Moving away from Episode 1, which delivered its much-needed exposition, “Nothing Is Simple Anymore” plays out the now-established plot. It brings the anticipation of prolonged hardship from the characters.
But for one character, it’s all about waking up to a nightmare after a long sleep venturing through the limitless Universe. Aughra (Donna Kimball) wakes up, all dusty, wondering what has happened to her great Thra — a world losing its precious resources. Episode 2 sees the start of her story; she wants to set things right.
And then there is Deet (Beccy Henderson), who has set herself on a quest but is riddled by animals that suddenly attack her despite her utmost friendliness. The darkness consuming land and animals prove a dangerous adventure, but a Podling named Hup (Victor Yerrid) helps her overcome the obstacles — a vicious Spitter ready to chew her up.
Brea (Anya Taylor-Joy) is determined to search for the meaning of the mysterious symbol that was presented to her in the opening episode. Here, we are demonstrated her wit, as she fools a Sifa for answers. The Elder Cadia explains the symbol means the end of all things. Due to her trickery, Brea’s mother opts to send her to The Order of Lesser Service; I presume this is a place of hard labor.
Most importantly, Episode 2 catches up with Rian (Taron Egerton), who is still trapped inside the castle, attempting to escape. The Skeksis have wickedly spread a story that Rian murdered Mira, but luckily he uses the dreamfast to show Grujin (Harris Dickinson) the truth. In a moment of close quarters, Rian flees the castle with the remaining bottle of essence, which used to be Mira’s life force.
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Season 1, Episode 2, “Nothing Is Simple Anymore” ends with more brutal showings from the Skeksis. They ask Rian’s father Ordon (Mark Strong) to bring back his son, and in return, he will be forgiven. They also punish The Scientist (Mark Hamill) for losing the Gelfling — they castigate him, ending the chapter with an insect eating away at his eyeballs.
