Episode 4, “The First Thing I Remember Is Fire” catches up with Brea (Alice Dinnean) and Rian (Taron Egerton) respectively. Their adventures are becoming more complicated, but the truth about the Skeksis is eking out slowly, giving the Gelfling something to fight for.

Brea is racing against time to solve a puzzle in a hidden room beneath the throne. There are seven symbols and above the door it reads, “Thra’s true balance will be found, when the true balance is sound”. The riddle baffles Brea at first, but eventually, she works out the sequence and unlocks the puzzle. The puzzle creates some kind of rock “being” called Lore, who is now the protector of Brea, tasked with taking her to The Circle of the Suns to free Gelflings from Skeksis power. Her family is wary of Brea’s plans, but she is as determined as ever.

Speaking of the Gelfling, Episode 4 sees The Chamberlain (Simon Pegg) attempting to form a plan to catch Rian and win back the Emperor’s (Jason Isaacs) trust. He heckles The Scientist (Mark Hamill) to repair the machine with the upgrades. The main idea is to use 50 Gelfling for the machine, providing plentiful essence. They test the machine on Gurjin (Harris Dickinson), torturing him little by little to get information about Rian.

Meanwhile, Rian is enjoying the company of Podlings — that’s only Naia tries to trade him back to the Skeksis. Rian convinces his fellow Gelfling acquaintances to dreamfast with him, and once it has concluded, his father, Ordon (Mark Strong), believes his son. The table they dreamfasted on shows a symbol — a dream-etching. Tavra recognizes the symbol; it’s the same outline that Brea saw.

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Season 1, Episode 4, “The First Thing I Remember Is Fire” ends with Ordon and Rian going on the run before the Skeksis find out about the betrayal. They are met with a Hunter, giving them a fight. Ordon is taken, devastating Rian, before he is captured too.
