The Skeksis are not used to the death of their own, and Episode 9 explores that weakness. The Skeksis make a deal with Aughra (Donna Kimball) to save The Hunter (Ralph Ineson), and in return free the Gelfling they have captured. The trade is her own life; to be thrown in front of the machine and drained of her essence.

When the Skeksis try to use the machine on Aughra, it initially fails, but they up the power and completely drain her. The Hunter still dies. At first, the Skeksis do not take the death well — not one of them have died in a thousand trine. In the Hunter’s memory, they hang him up in the Castle in armor to honor his existence.

Tavra (Caitriona Balfe), Brea (Caitriona Balfe) and Seladon (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) flee from the Castle of the Crystal. Tavra reveals the union with the Ascendency, and the trio fights their way out; The General attack thems, and Tavra is stabbed. The Chamberlain uses essence to help The General recover — he was hurt in the fight. “The Crystal Calls” has all the ingredients of the beginnings of a war. In a moment of heartbreak for Brea and Seladon, Tavra dies.

Deet wakes up in Episode 9, and she and Rian get their hands on one half of the Dual Glaive; it just so happened that Maudra Argot had it. After hearing guidance from Argot, Deet and Rian continue their quest to land the other half of the Dual Glaive, knowing it will be critical in the war.

They find the other half of the Dual Glaive in a large iron cast, and when pieced together, it gives Rian the power to speak to all of Thra. He offers a rallying cry against the Skeksis, with his face appearing on the Crystal delivering the message. The Emperor responds, claiming he will crush the Gelfling.

The Emperor’s plans revolve around dawn, where he and the Skeksis will descend on the Gelfling villages, but as he’s saying this, he’s wheezing. It’s clear their power is waning.

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Season 1, Episode 9, “The Crystal Calls” ends with a shot of The Hunter — he’s twitching.
