The Hockey Girls Recap: Down To The Wire Shootout

“The Match” provides more hockey than the rest of the reason combine, but no less disappointment.

This recap of The Hockey Girls Season 1, Episode 12, “The Match”, contains spoilers. You can check out our spoiler-free season review by clicking these words and our thoughts on the previous episodes by clicking these ones.

Just in case we thought that Gina (Claudia Riera) had moved past her suspicions of Lore (Mireia Oriol) and Flor (Asia Ortega), The Hockey Girls Episode 12 proves otherwise by opening with her having a nightmare about the two of them. To make matters worse, a scout from the national team is interested in them both; Gina increasingly feels slightly left out of their little club.

The good news for her, though, is that Flor’s mum says they’re going back to Buenos Aires. As for Lore’s travel plans, they’re canceled. After a chat with Òscar (Nil Cardoner), she decides she’ll be better off staying with her family.

Anyway, it’s time for the match.

The Hockey Girls Episode 12 features easily more hockey than the rest of the season combined. And for good reason, because this is the big one; the long-awaited rematch against Germán’s (Marc Clotet) team. The girls get off to a good start, but the opposition plays rough and Flor, their star scorer, starts to lose her head. After the first period, Anna (Iria del Río) gives a locker room pep talk that lights a fire under the team, and they’re able to come back from a deficit to bring things level at full time. Any sports fan knows the indescribable pressure of a penalty shootout, and the one in “The Match” delivers a fair amount, with the whole affair resting on a final shot to be taken by Lore.

And she misses.

I’m surprised The Hockey Girls did Lore so dirty here — first, her dad suddenly dies, then she loses the entire game for her beloved team. Afterward, it all kicks off, mainly with Emma (Dèlia Brufau) and the rest of the Olympic team, since they all still see her as an outsider. In the locker room, she breaks down to Anna about her abandonment as a child, though Anna helps her to come to terms with it.

Slightly later, Gina asks Flor if anything happened between her and Lore, and she admits that it did, which really only confirms what Gina already knew. Still, props for honesty. Flor tells her mum she doesn’t want to leave for Buenos Aires, and elsewhere, Berta (Natàlia Barrientos) is informed that her own mum is free to leave the mental institution.

As a final kick when the team is down, Enric reveals that despite all their efforts during the season, he still intends to discontinue them.
