Summary

“Preemies, Weed and Infidelity” lives up to its title with a new arrival, a love triangle, and a drug disaster.

This recap of The Conners Season 2, Episode 1, “Preemies, Weed and Infidelity”, contains spoilers.

As far as episode titles go, “Preemies, Weed and Infidelity” does a grand job of summing up exactly what The Conners (ABC) Season 2, Episode 1 concerns itself with. Let’s take a look at what the titular family is up to in reverse order of title priority, just to keep things spicy.

First, infidelity, and thus Darlene (Sara Gilbert). During a funny sequence in which Darlene and Jackie (Laurie Metcalf) pretend to be searching the couch, the former admits that she’s currently juggling two relationships: one with Ben (Jay R. Ferguson) and the other with David (Johnny Galecki, though he’s absent for this episode.) She doesn’t want to be sleeping with two men at once, since that’s just not who she is, though by the end of “Preemies, Weed and Infidelity” she is indeed sleeping with two men at once. Oops. That bonkers love triangle will be entertaining as it progresses.

So, weed. The pothead is Harris (Emma Kenney), though perhaps that isn’t the right term. She’s not actually doing any pot, but she is baking it into cookies and selling it, revealed by Lucy Punch as an angry mother whose son was led to the light by one of the offending biscuits. This subplot leads to two interesting conversations in The Conners Season 2, Episode 1, the first between Harris and Darlene which suggests the former doesn’t have any remorse whatsoever for what she did — on the contrary she’s proud of her business flourishing in a saturated market — and the second between Darlene and Dan (John Goodman), in which he testily tells her that she hasn’t been present enough as a mother. Lingering resentment continues to be the thread that binds the Conners together.

But there’s something — or, more accurately, someone — new to bring everyone together in “Preemies, Weed and Infidelity”: Beverly Rose, the result of Becky’s (Lecy Goranson) “geriatric” pregnancy and dangerously early labor. Jackie isn’t a fan of the name, obviously, but everyone seems a fan of the kiddo — a new Conner, albeit one that is currently being kept alive by hospital equipment. Congratulations on the new arrival, The Conners fans. She obviously couldn’t wait to get here.
