I used to love avocados. And then one day I stopped purchasing them. The healthy fat is good, but it irked me how quickly they deteriorated. Now I rely on it for my nachos for the occasional meal, rather than my regular meal planning. But I never knew that the fruit was such an industry, or that it influenced generations of oppression.

Episode 1, “The Avocado War” goes in-depth into the industry itself. How the supply boomed as part of healthy diets and the industry financing experts to keep the message on note. Americans embraced avocados, and USA suppliers enjoyed the seasonal upturns, and then the business became a source of paranoia, as Mexico agreed on a trade agreement with Canada and the US, which means the local markets were threatened.

But, according to “The Avocado War”, the introduction of Mexico helped the seasonal dips on American farms. When American companies could not supply due to the season, Mexican companies could.

It all sounds overwhelmingly positive at this stage.

Well, the second half of Episode 1, “The Avocado War” details how avocado supply became part of the cartel’s leverage in Mexico. Rotten gives us a high-level view of how cartels tapped into local resourcing as well as drug trade to increase their profits in certain, avocado-advantageous Mexican regions. It’s fascinating how police and certain sectors seemingly merged into one, and the locals not knowing who was good or bad. Avocados are a big deal.

Tancítaro stumped my brain, as cartels in that region appear as police, and it’s frightening how it’s difficult to understand who the law enforcement is.

The super-food has become a magnet for the cartel, and although these regions have “settled”, apparently, the war on ensuring the supply remains in the pocket for the few is a fight still occurring.

And then there’s also water. With the increase of supply means regions in a drought, or risk of drought, are finding their water suppliers drying up, with nearby parties creating their wells.

So, the next time you eat a delicious, oily avocado, remember the enormity of the industry and how it impacts some parts of the world. Rotten Season 2 Episode 1, “The Avocado War” is an eye-opener.
