This recap of Hulu series Dollface Season 1, Episode 9, “Feminist” contains significant spoilers. You can read the recap of the previous episode by clicking these words.

Episode 9 is by far the least normal episode of Dollface. It’s also abundantly clear that we are witnessing a dream of Jules (Kat Dennings) on the eve of the Women’s March. It opens up with Jules under pressure at work. Celeste, her boss, asks her workforce about a pair of red shoes that were found in her bedroom from the Retreat of the previous episode. It is clear Celeste suspects a woman is intervening in her marriage.

The whole scene is black and white and when Jules claims the red shoes for herself and moments later is knocked out by a cyclist and opens her eyes to a world of color, it’s clear that Episode 9 is doing their own take on The Wizard of Oz.

The rest of Episode 9, “Feminist” sees Jules join the Women’s March in the hope of staying away from Celeste, who is taking on The Wicked Witch of the West. Jules finally bumps into Stella, and then Madison, and finally Izzy in a portaloo. Jules is nervous about seeing Madison, who is still in denial about Celeste and her husband Colin. There are plenty of dialogue exchanges that discuss women’s appearance and if they should stick together, and not allow men to split them apart.

The girls come across an aspiring feminist activist near the end of the chapter and they ask her plenty of questions about how women are supposed to be. The activist dismisses their questions about what women are “supposed to do” and hints about the equality of freedom and choice.

Dollface Season 1, Episode 9, “Feminist” closes with Celeste apologizing for her outlandish behavior and just when Jules believed everything was going to be okay, she wakes up on the day of the Women’s March. It was all a dream.
