It’s Ben (Omar Benson Miller) and Michelle’s (Maya Lynne Robinson) anniversary in The Unicorn Episode 9, and they’re having their usual annual party to commemorate the occasion. Everyone’s invited, including a potential plus-one for Wade (Walton Goggins): Delia’s (Michaela Watkins) workmate Anna (Sarayu Blue), an infectious disease specialist so well-traveled that she’s had malaria twice.
But Wade is a bit sick of being set up by his friends. He’s still attending the widow’s group, and the women there find the whole process tedious too. While Delia talks with Anna at work and convinces her to meet Wade at the party, Wade and Caroline (Betsy Brandt) hatch a plan to be each other’s fake date so their friends leave them alone.
Natalie (Makenzie Moss) and Grace (Ruby Jay) find all this fake date stuff hilarious, and they think the same thing that the audience is supposed to — that “No Pressure” is building to Wade and Caroline discovering that all their pretending is a lot more real than either of them would like to admit. Not quite, but we’ll get to that in a moment.
Michelle’s routine during these celebrations is to get indescribably stressed over the responsibilities of catering and then cheers up once everyone starts complimenting her on the food. This time, though, word gets back to Ben about it, and as a favor to her, he decides to cater the party himself. The only problem is that he barely orders enough food to film himself, let alone fifty-plus guests, so before long everyone is wasted.
And of course, Wade and Anna meet naturally and really hit it off, leading to the awkward revelation that he has a “girlfriend”, even though he doesn’t. Realizing he can’t let Anna get away, Wade calls off the ruse with Caroline, who fakes a dramatic outburst to make things convincing. He manages to catch up with Anna outside and explain everything, and they kiss — for the first time, The Unicorn Season 1, Episode 9 sees Wade make an organic connection to someone.
