Messiah (Netflix) Season 1, Episode 3 recap: "The Finger of God"
3.5

Summary

The Messiah makes his way to Texas in “The Finger of God”, where natural disasters and more true believers await.

This recap of Messiah Season 1, Episode 3, “The Finger of God”, contains spoilers.

Rebecca (Stefania LaVie Owen) has had enough of Dilley, Texas in Messiah Episode 3 — she’s packing her bags and hitting the road with a thumb in the air. And why not? Felix (John Ortiz) is contemplating whether to burn the church down. Nobody there is doing well. And they’re doing even worse when Anna (Melinda Page Hamilton) gets a sudden tornado warning. While she and Felix are able to hustle most of the community into the shelter, the tornado hits while Rebecca is still outside. Through the swirling debris, Felix sees who he thinks is Rebecca, stood right in the middle of the maelstrom. But it isn’t his daughter — it’s Al-Masih (Mehdi Dehbi).

This miraculous footage does the rounds, finding its way quickly to Eva (Michelle Monaghan). In the aftermath of the tornado, the church is the only building left standing — in a conversation with Al-Masih in which both men quote scripture, Felix asks if he was sent to stop him from burning the place down. It’s clear he believes there is a divine component to all this, so when he’s arrested by FBI Agent Will Mathers (Will Traval) for improper entry into the United States as an alien, Felix insists he’ll get him out.

Messiah Episode 3, “The Finger of God”, follows on from the previous episode’s cliffhanger ending, with Avrim (Tomer Sisley) interrogating young Jibril (Sayyid El Alami), who apparently knows nothing. (Is this supposed to evoke Peter denying Jesus?) Avrim is staunchly a non-believer and wants to prove to Jibril that there is no God — that doesn’t bode well for the lad.

Felix, though, can’t help but believe, and he’s insistent than everything that has happened has happened for a very specific reason. Eva is also in Dilley, most beloved of divinity, but she’s having less luck. After being unnecessarily rude to her doting father, she starts bleeding from between her legs. It isn’t all miracles in Texas.

It isn’t all miracles anywhere else, either. Avrim drops Jibril, now a bloody mess, back at the border. He drinks in his car — which, as we’ve established, is where he apparently spends most of his time when he isn’t assaulting refugees — while parked outside his baby momma’s house. When his daughter brings him a blanket outside, she spots the blood on his clothes, and her mother carries her back inside angrily.

In a rare non-cliffhanger ending to Messiah Season 1, Episode 3, Eva watches her bloody clothes spin at an all-night laundrette while watching a bird attempt to escape. It repeatedly flies into the windows and she mutters, “You’re not supposed to be here.” Eventually, it finds a way out.
