Summary

More of the same isn’t necessarily a bad in this smart and energetic family-friendly mystery series.

This review of The Inbestigators Season 2 is spoiler-free. You can check out our thoughts on the first season by clicking these words.

If it helps, consider this more a PSA than a traditional review, since The Inbestigators Season 2 is very, very similar to its predecessor. And that’s no surprise really. They both premiered on ABC Me in Australia and New Zealand in 2019 before enjoying a global Netflix release a couple of months later; August in the case of the first season and, obviously, January 2020 in the case of the second, which doesn’t leave much time for radical reinvention. No matter. The show’s still a likable kid-focused thing about a group of fifth-graders solving family-friendly local mysteries, and, to be quite honest, I don’t think it really needs to be anything more than that.

The Inbestigators Season 2 retains the same format; each of its ten half-hour episodes contains two fifteen-minute mysteries. Things go missing, people inexplicably get better at soccer and miniature golf, there are wrongful accusations, interns, and the swapping of Treat Day lunches for healthier alternatives. It’s not exactly high stakes, but it doesn’t need to be. Maudie (Anna Cooke), Ezra (Aston Droomer), Kyle (Jamil Smyth-Secka) and Ava (Abby Bergman) are still fun characters with a laidback dynamic, and your kids will root for them. That’s what matters, isn’t it? Anyone looking up a review of this show is likely doing so for one reason — to see if their kids will like it. Odds are they will. Glad I could be of some use.
