Picking up immediately where we left off, Nomi (Emily Arlook) is pregnant, and the friend group is stunned. She explains that after she broke up with Paige, her Professor, she had a one-night stand (with a guy who she didn’t name explicitly) after drinks with Zoey (Yara Shahidi). After an awkward pause, there’s a group hug amongst the girls.
Zoey asks why she didn’t get an abortion, but Nomi says that while she’s pro-choice, she had no interest in terminating her pregnancy. Sky and Jaz (Chloe and Halle) ask how this is going to change their living arrangements, but Nomi insists it’s not.
Ana (Francia Raisa), being the conservative and religious one of the group, is going all out to be supportive of Nomi. She’s making a health-conscious breakfast that will help the baby’s development. Zoey tries to pry and find out who the baby’s dad is, but Nomi quickly departs with her breakfast without answering.
The guys tell the girls that maybe Nomi is growing distant with them because girls tell each other everything, right? Zoey denies this until she has a brush in with Luca (Luka Sabbat), who then informs her that Nomi told him months ago. Yikes.
At the bar, Zoey asks Nomi why she told Luca first. Nomi says that she knew Luca would be judge free. She asks when she’s ever been judgmental. Cue the flashbacks of different episodes throughout the last two seasons. Zoey then goes on a tirade about how weird the whole situation is, from her confiding in Luca to her being knocked up with a mysterious baby daddy.
Her ranting garners attention from everyone else in the bar. Embarrassed and annoyed, Nomi tells Zoey this is why she never plans on confiding in her ever again. Later in Grown-ish Season 3, Episode 2, Zoey goes to see Luca. She asks if she’s a lousy friend. Luca tells Zoey that sometimes she needs to be a listening ear rather than give unwarranted advice. After she leaves, Luca goes back to bed, where he has a new (girlfriend? friend with benefits?) waiting for him portrayed by Ryan Destiny. They share a kiss.
Zoey apologizes for not being the type of friend who can’t just sit there and listen. Nomi confides in Zoey that she didn’t care about having unprotected sex and was excited to have a baby because she’d have someone who loves her unconditionally. But now reality has set in, and she’s terrified. However, instead of reprimanding her, Zoey hugs her.
With the guys, Aaron (Trevor Jackson) vents how Nomi being pregnant has freaked him out. He didn’t practice safe sex with every partner he had. What if he has a child out there somewhere? He scans the social media pages of all his flings and spots a woman with a three-year-old son. He also has the same hairstyle as Aaron. Coincidence? The answer is… yes. As Aaron goes to talk to the child at the playground, his father asks what Aaron’s doing talking to his kid. Having gotten excited over the idea of being a dad, Aaron emotionally tells the kid’s actual father to raise him right. It’s our light-hearted B-plot of the episode.
Grown-ish Season 3, Episode 2, is a nice follow-up to the premiere. Zoey’s maturing. She’s listening to what her friends are saying for once and taking it to heart. We got developments with Luca and Ryan Destiny’s new character and a B-plot that was much funnier than last week’s. Hopefully, the string of good episodes continue.
