Post-break-up, Zoey and Luca try to be “just friends” while Vivek enlists Jazz and Doug’s help in modifying his dating profile on Grown-ish season 3, episode 3, “Close Friends.”
This recap of Grown-ish Season 3, Episode 3, “Close Friends”, contains spoilers. You can check out our thoughts on the previous episode by clicking these words.
This week, Zoey deals with seeing Luca all over campus, both literally and figuratively. She goes from seeing the actual Luca, to picturing Luca as fellow students and even faculty. It’s your typical awkward post-breakup phase made more difficult by the fact that the two hang out in the same friend group. It poses the question of the half-hour: can you be friends with your ex?
Zoey comes home to see Nomi and Luca hanging out. Nomi tries to diffuse the tension, but it fails. Nomi explains that Luca is the only one who still treats her the same now that she’s pregnant, so she wants Zoey to accept their dynamic.
At the hangout spot, the group discusses break-up politics. The convo yields mixed results: some say yes, others say no, and the rest say they’d need time. After Zoey catches Luca chilling out by himself, she invites him to hang out with her friends. He declines, but when has Zoey ever taken no for an answer? She gets the picture after several more failed attempts.
Meanwhile, in Grown-ish Season 3, Episode 3, Zoey is in class with the new student portrayed by Ryan Destiny. We now know her name is Jillian. We also learn that she’s here as part of an exchange program at Spelman. They hit it off. How long will the pleasantries last once she discovers that Jillian and Luca had sex?
After Luca tells Zoey that he wants to give hanging out as friends a second shot, they hit it off… until she mentions that she showed some of his designs to Joey Bada$$, and he wants to wear some of his designs. He reacts negatively, much to Zoey’s surprise. They have a falling out that ends with Luca telling Zoey that he can’t wear any of his clothes. They have another argument at Zoey’s house, which leads to them having sex in their kitchen. In Zoey’s case, it doesn’t look like Luca and her can be just friends yet.
The B-plot for the week in Grown-ish Season 3, Episode 3 includes Vivek being jealous of all the dramatic love lives that his friends have had. Jazz takes a look at Vivek’s dating profile and decides to modify it so he can finally get a girlfriend. Vivek also recruits Jazz’s boyfriend Doug to assist. Lines between the trio garnered a few laughs from me, and it seems like the woman Vivek has matched with likes him so far. It’s a lighthearted B-plot that shines because of the characters involved.
This week’s Grown-ish was pretty good. Zoey and Luca slipping up and sleeping together will likely have significant consequences for the two of them once the former finds out about the latter’s sexual tryst with Jillian. I hope to see more of Ryan Destiny, who has the potential to be a fun addition to the cast. We’ll have to see what happens next week!
