Summary

Netflix Special Tom Papa: You’re Doing Great! is all about self-love and perspective as the comedian lays down the truth about life.

Netflix Special Tom Papa: You’re Doing Great! will be out on the platform on Feb 4, 2020 — add it to your list now!

There’s something about the way Tom Papa tells his audience that they are doing fine. That they are peaking at life. That there’s absolutely nothing to worry about because life is about being “the best”. It kind of reminded me of a recent Gary Vee podcast episode I listened to where he said, “We made it. Humans f–king won”. And in that sense, both of these men are right. We did make it, we have managed to co-exist amongst a population of billions. That’s extremely lucky and unprecedented.

And that’s the core of Tom Papa’s Netflix special You’re Doing Great! He tells the audience to not be overwhelmed by social media. He explains that those who take 50 photos while on holiday are not necessarily having a good time. That person does not tell us that they were stuck in baggage claim at the airport for an hour.

There’s nothing wrong with being average.

Tom Papa: You’re Doing Great! is about self-love and perspective in a humorous way. It values poking fun at yourself while understanding that life is tough despite our privileged advantages. Those who do live “normal lives” will appreciate the self-love aspect, while those who are extremely ambitious and care about judgment will appreciate Tom’s perspective.

His jokes are well written and succinct. He manages to relay punchline after punchline, but ironically they are not really punchlines, they are well-opined statements; life snippets that feel slightly preachy but provoke that inner self.

Tom Papa: You’re Doing Great! is almost like an awakening. Okay, maybe I’ve gone a bit far. Regardless, it’s a great stand-up.
