Since the previous episode ended with the shocking reveal of Sarge Will’s death, it’s only logical that Dare Me Episode 8 opens with Addy and Colette in the midst of the scene. Colette insists she didn’t do it, and whether Addy believes her or not, they both attempt to erase traces of their presence from the scene. A classic cover-up is a fine device for the show at this late stage, especially since it’s going to rely on the flaky trust between two people who, in all honesty, barely know each other, and is threatened by a vengeful and largely unstable outsider in the form of Beth.

Guilt quickly emerges as the underlying theme of “Containment”, and the loss of control as a result of it plays right into the show’s penchant for surrealism. Addy’s state of mind stands in stark contrast to the general sense of elation in the aftermath of the successful cheerleading performance. Eventually the praise and adoration the team is receiving gets too much for her, and she passes out.

It’s Beth who Addy awakes to in Dare Me Episode 8 – perhaps the worst person to be confronted by at this stage. With Colette and obviously Sarge Will nowhere to be found, it doesn’t take Poirot to put the pieces together, but Addy remains tight-lipped. Colette’s attempts to keep up appearances at practice also see her turn on her confidante.

Before long, it’s simply too much for Addy to deal with, and she demands that Colette reveal the truth. And that truth is, apparently, that she had nothing to do with his death. While he obviously took their affair a lot more seriously than she did, since for her it was simply a break from mundanity and routine, she claims not to have killed him. In her desperation, she turned to Addy as a friend – an unreasonable level of responsibility to bestow on someone whose future is in large part your responsibility. For both women, their connection is the only thing they can hold onto in the throes of their guilt.

In the morning, things only get worse, since Will’s body has been discovered, his death declared – at least for now – a suicide. Police and forensics pore over the crime scene where Addy and Colette stood at the opening of Dare Me Season 1, Episode 8. Will their presence be uncovered? And perhaps more importantly, if Colette didn’t kill Sarge Will, who did?
