The Circle: France (Netflix) review - round and round we go
3

Summary

It’s basically review-proof anyway, but this is indeed more of The Circle, and you already know whether or not that’s something you care about.

This review of The Circle: France Season 1 is spoiler-free. You can check out our reviews of the American remake by clicking these words, and the Brazilian version by clicking these ones.

It would perhaps be helpful to consider this more of a public service announcement than a review since I’ve already reviewed The Circle twice as it is — and we’re now not too far away from living in an episode of it ourselves. Nevertheless, The Circle: France is available on Netflix, the second national spin-off from the American remake of the British original and oh my, this is a bit confusing.

The concept remains basically unchanged, however, so that’s easy to keep track of at least. A collection of models, influencers, and minor French celebrities cram into an apartment building and decide whether to present as themselves or a sneaky catfish on the titular social networking site through which various outlandish alliances are formed, broken, and so on, and so forth. Here we have real estate magnates, kickboxers, and various other Instagram-savvy personalities, along with surprising appearances from wives and friends and the relatively novel twist of twin siblings catfishing as one person.

And on and on it goes. The Circle: France is what it is — essentially review-proof, in that those who’ll like it will already know they like it and those who don’t aren’t about to have their minds changed. Still, Netflix evidently sees a banker in this series, and who knows how many versions we’ll have before the year is out. In the dystopian future we’re all inevitably hurtling towards, perhaps this will be the only form of entertainment we have.
