Kanan Gill’s jokes are funny but I wouldn’t argue that they are memorable. Regardless, Yours Sincerely, Kanan Gill is worth adding to your list this weekend.
Netflix stand-up special Yours Sincerely, Kanan Gill was released on Netflix on April 24, 2020.
Indian comedian Kanan Gill waltzes on stage with no care in the world — he’s chirpy, confident and ready to land the lines. As part of our Netflix coverage, we have become used to reviewing various forms of stand-ups; some frantic, some purposefully anxiety-filled and some that are role-playing. Kanan Gill is just calm.
His style his non-stop. Where some comedians prefer to hold a break between laughs, Kanan Gill trusts his audience to keep up. He loves to delve into his Indian culture, pointing out stark differences between being in America and being in India; for instance, what it’s like to be in an Indian airport where they have no announcements over speakers, apart from the announcer that says they will be no announcements. He touches on a lot of irony in his stand-up, but he’s so casual about it.
I guess Yours Sincerely, Kanan Gill is equivalent to the saying of, “Well, that’s life,” and that’s the biggest positive that comes from the Netflix stand-up.
Yours Sincerely, Kanan Gill delves into wants; Kanan wanted health but he got a scare and a hilarious doctor’s trip. He wanted success but then he soon felt like he was going to be a failure. He also lists the plans he had written for himself earlier in life, including “try to find love”. The whole point of his jokes is that we all make plans but “life is life” — there’s no point in dwelling.
Kanan Gill’s jokes are funny but I wouldn’t argue that they are memorable. He’s more like a Jimmy Carr who likes to drop as many punchlines as possible. Regardless, Yours Sincerely, Kanan Gill is worth adding to your list this weekend.
