So, is resurrecting a dead copper worth the financial expense? That’s what the commission is hoping to determine by interviewing DI John Major (Daniel Mays), with the ethical concerns of the endeavor a rather obvious second priority. How many regular plods could be employed for the same amount of brass that was spent bringing Major back, especially since Major is, you know, absolutely useless? Luckily for him, he has a cozy relationship with former Commissioner Chalmers (Tracy Ann Oberman), and his best friend DI Roy Carver (Stephen Graham) to give a touching speech on his behalf.

Chalmers is even willing to tip off Major and Carver about Liam Cleasby (Richard Gadd) and his red Jeep; they follow a photograph to the location where he burned the vehicle at the end of the previous episode. But Ryle (Emily Lloyd-Saini) and Gilbert (Steve Oram) quickly arrive to move them on, while a hooded figure watches from afar. Ominous!

Dennett (Rosie Cavaliero) is still worried that the commission wants to cancel the project in Code 404 Episode 3, so she gives Carver and Major a new target: Latimer, who is expected to visit his old, ailing grandmother Mrs. Latimer (Leila Hoffman). We cut to Carver and Major on a stakeout, during which the latter reveals he doesn’t sleep — it’s a waste of taxpayer money — and has been building balloon animals to help his dexterity and motor skills. Oh, and they’re not really staking out Mrs. Latimer, but Kelly (Anna Maxwell Martin), who Major suspects of seeing another man. She catches them watching her and when Major confronts her she confesses, though she doesn’t name Roy. She explains to Major that the man’s name isn’t important because it’s over between them, but he’s a good and decent man so he will understand. This is another example of a recurring gag in Code 404, which is Stephen Graham doing proper dramatic acting that is immediately undercut as a joke. (The first instance in this episode was during the committee hearing at the beginning.)

Next, Carver and Major go to Cleasby’s flat, where they find Kristof (Richard Pepple), who almost hits them both with a shotgun. He’s the dealer who was there the night Major got killed; he also confessed to him the name of Major’s killer, although he can’t remember it now. Kristoff flings a panicked look at Carver when Major pushes him to reveal the name again — coincidence? Either way, the shooter apparently goes by the alias of “The Juggler”. Kristof says if the cops give him a few hours he’ll find the real name behind the moniker, but they need to be careful since there are bent coppers in the SIU.

While staking out Mrs. Latimer’s house, Major falls asleep and leans his head on the car’s horn, alerting her to their presence. Carver is fuming that he’s been asleep all throughout the stakeout: “It’s good practice for when they switch you off altogether for being s***e.” Mrs. Latimer confronts them and Major is totally up-front about the fact they’re looking for her grandson. She isn’t as forthcoming with information in return; she and Major get into such a row that she has a heart attack, though there’s a bit of an implication that Major might have intentionally short-circuited her pacemaker or some such. Either way, Latimer comes out in a rage, and Major tackles him, just as Kristof calls saying he needs protection: the conspiracy goes deep, and if they bring him in safely, he’ll share everything he knows about it.

Of course, Carver and Major aren’t able to bring him in safely. When they get back to Cleasby’s flat, Kristof is dead, having had his head stoved in by a juggling club. Just as Carver is holding the murder weapon aloft, Ryle and Gilbert arrive.
