Netflix documentary Have a Good Trip: Adventures in Psychedelics was released on the platform on May 11, 2020.

Do drugs? Don’t do drugs? There’s no certified message in Netflix’s Have a Good Trip: Adventures in Psychedelics. The documentary has a single purpose — to present the stories of many celebrities who describe their experiences regarding the use of psychedelics. They either recount a story where the trip was bad and in turn taught them a lesson, or when the trip meant something to them — bringing forth a lifechanging experience.

As someone who has experienced a few trips in life, I do wonder what the appeal is of watching celebrities explain their stories via animations and reenacted scenes. But it is entertaining. I can only imagine that the appeal is that watching famous people discuss their experiences makes us folk feel normal. It would be interesting if Netflix relived stories where trips went extremely wrong — that would make for a more insightful documentary experience.

“I don’t think psychedelics can be the answer to the world’s problems, but it can be a start.”

Those are the famous words from Sting, who demonstrates in the Netflix documentary how even bad trips can be a learning experience. Listening to Sting discuss the time he was tripping and had to help a cow give birth is the type of trip that would terrify most people.

Have a Good Trip: Adventures in Psychedelics is as much educational as humourous — the Netflix documentary lists many drugs and how inexperience and experience can provide a different outcome. In a nutshell, do not overdose and understand your limits.

I remember when I took mushrooms and I found myself believing that a nearby bin could talk for most of the night. If that kind of story makes you laugh, then Netflix’s Have a Good Trip: Adventures in Psychedelics will definitely amuse audiences, with wild “legendary” type trips that these celebrities have chosen not to take to the grave.
