“Samar’s Past” loses some dramatic pace in focusing largely on the past, but it amounts to a big cliffhanger.
This recap of Whispers season 1, episode 6, “Samar’s Past”, contains spoilers. You can check out our thoughts on the previous episode by clicking these words.
In the (very) brief pre-credits scene of Whispers episode 6, we Hassan text Samar asking about Walid before jumping into his car. We know how that turned out.
Cutting to the morning of the accident, Samar calls Lama to tell her that Hassan has called asking to meet her urgently. Lama says he can’t have figured out the connection between them but not to do anything without her say so. She then meets with Hassan in a cafe. Apparently, Samar hid the fact that she had a child. Hassan is struggling with the idea that he has to wait to meet his son, but he’s also concerned about what else Samar is hiding from him. This is her last chance to be truthful with him. He knows she’s plotting something, but he says her plans will hurt her more than him. He advises her to leave the country or he’ll make her life a living hell. He gives her two days to do so. This is a side of Hassan we haven’t yet seen.
Samar reports all this to Lama, who thinks he’s bluffing, but Samar can’t leave the country and abandon her son. Samar then goes to meet with Ibrahim, and a flashback shows their original meeting at a gallery. He’s very complimentary of her art. In the present day, Ibrahim says that Hassan needs Samar for his son, despite what he claimed about already knowing who he is — unless, of course, Lama told him.
Throughout its middle stretch, Whispers episode 6 spends a fair amount of time on Samar’s everyday life teaching painting out of her apartment and being stood up by Ibrahim. When she falls asleep, she dreams of Hassan. She’s woken by a call from “Sunshine”, her son, informing her that Hassan is dead. She sees the text from Hassan asking about Walid.
In a flashback, we see Samar first telling Hassan about their son. She’s pretty blunt about it. In the present day, out for lunch with Ibrahim, Samar explains how she desired revenge for a long time, but now that Hassan is gone she feels no satisfaction from it, only regret that his son never got to know him. She’s still going to go ahead with “it” though, whatever the details might be. Ibrahim hasn’t heard of Walid either.
Samar also gets a weird posthumous call from Hassan, which is what prompts her to contact Amal. Lama visits Samar at home, mostly to confirm that Hassan’s death hasn’t changed anything in their agreement. Samar confesses that she wants to meet his family, which Lama is totally against. Nevertheless, Samar goes to meet Waad, which we saw in the previous episode.
In a flashback, we see Samar run into Hassan at her exhibition, but he seems shocked to see her there and quickly scurries off. Weird. In the present day, she also receives the same photos of Hassan that everyone else did.
As we rapidly approach the end of Whispers season 1, episode 6, as Samar waits outside for Waad’s cue, she sees Khaled enter. Khaled is her son!
