After a couple of weeks devoted to team-building, Stargirl episode 6, “The Justice Society”, kicks thing up a notch. With the gang together now, they have to prepare for their first mission, and it amounts to a slick climax that suggests plenty of potential for the back half of this charming superhero show.
Despite this episode’s namesake, we mustn’t forget the Injustice Society, and we open with a typical act of villainy just to make the matter clear. It’s two teams suiting up for battle, not just one, and the good guys might not be as prepared as their adversaries. Pat, confronting Courtney about what she’s doing, wisely cautions again it. Items from the Society might not necessarily protect this young, inexperienced team of heroes from stone-cold killers.
And plus, how do you just ask for things back when they come packaged with superpowered personas? Most teenagers have trouble putting their phones down, let alone world-saving magic gear. Stargirl has always worked as a coming-of-age drama by bundling its superhero tropes up in its high-school ones, and that trend continues here in “The Justice Society”. The show’s tendency to also juxtapose good-guy development with bad-guy doomsday plotting is also a continuing balancing act.
Because of all this, it doesn’t take much to figure out where Stargirl episode 6 is going. Courtney, Rick, Yolanda, and Beth are on a collision course with Paula and Lawrence, aka Tigress and Sportsmaster, all throughout the episode, with Pat waiting in the wings for a day-saving intervention. But the fact this amounts to an excellent fight shows a great deal of promise, as well as coming packaged with the realization that there’s some training still to be done, especially since the Injustice Society have their sights set on the new team.
With solid action, strong characters, great balancing, and patient storytelling, Stargirl season 1, episode 6 is a solid example of all the things that this DC Universe/CW show has been consistently getting right throughout its debut season. And it also suggests much more of the same to come, which is all you can really ask for.
