Beastman Michiru is cloaked, trying her best to get money out of the cash machine. People walk past her and graffiti on the animal rights poster as she hides — there’s an anti-beastman demonstration happening which is the result of the Beastmen district. She flees to Anima-City where they accept her kind. While fleeing, she’s attacked by a group of people who are clearly anti-beastman.
Other beasts arrive to help her. They are volunteers helping other beastmen. With the volunteers, Michiru heads to Anima-City on a boat. When she gets to the city, she feels alone and is suddenly surrounded by loads of wolves in the middle of the night and she’s scared. But they are all beastmen waiting for the Mayor’s speech that hails the city as a great refuge for beastmen — Michiru feels happy that she’s finally included.
The veiled threat
At the halfway point of BNA: Brand New Animal season 1, episode 1, “Runaway Raccoon”, Mayor Rosé gets a call from the Primeminister. The Primeminister gives her a veiled threat that if there’s any trouble, she knows what will happen.
Back in the city and Michiru becomes accustomed but is soon pickpocketed. In anger, she hits some scaffolding and the big screen that was used for the Mayor’s speech topples over. Michiru meets a wolf who is angry at her for ruining the celebrations. She claims a man nearby caused the collapse. The wolf uses his sniff senses to try and find the man Michiru is on about.
How does BNA: Brand New Animal season 1, episode 1, “Runaway Raccoon” end?
The wolf finds the man (Sato) responsible for the scaffolding and the wolf is surrounded by other beastmen with guns. He senses that they have sold out to humans as he smells the scent on them and attacks them all. Michiru sees the whole event unfolding. One of the beastmen grabs Michiru and the wolf saves her. Michiru is not happy with the wolf’s violence and asks him to stop and suddenly, a large ball of energy emits from her and the wolf stops. The wolf explains that all humans are the same but Michiru disagrees, claiming she was human too. Episode 1 introduces the audience to this kind of segregation that is reflective of politics today.
