How does BNA: Brand New Animal season 1, episode 3, “Rhino Melancholy” open?
Episode 3 begins with Shirou checking out Michiru’s student ID and sniffing it to understand the scent. The scent confirms she used to be human. One day she formed and she was quickly persecuted. That’s when Michiru heard of Anima-City.
Locked up
Back in the present day, Michiru wakes up and asks about the Sylvasta Medical Centre in the distance which is apparently doing loads of research. Shirou decides to lock Michiru into a room now that he learnt she used to be human and wants more information before freeing her. I found this to be an overreaction by the wolf.
Let me help
The Mayor comes over and tells Shirou that the Sylvasta Medical Centre is under threat by a bomb from humans. Michiru realises that if the centre is blown, they may never find a cure for her disease. She finally meets the Mayor who states she is clearly a beastman. Michiru asks the Mayor to help her find the bomb. The mayor tells Michiru that she can help but she must not tell anyone that she used to be human. Shirou tells Michiru that the medical centre is funded by humans which have caused conflicts. The wolf believes he knows where the bomb is and that Sylvasta Medical Centre is truly under threat.
Stopping the bombs
The halfway point ups the action in BNA: Brand New Animal season 1, episode 3, “Rhino Melancholy”. While spying on the men arranging the bomb, they see Michiru and chase her. Meanwhile, scientists in the Medical Centre say, “It’s her,” implying that they knew Michiru used to be human. Shirou helps Michiru run away from the gang.
Part of the building was blown up and the Medical Director Mr Yaba is fretting. It’s clear he’s in on this. Shirou explains to him that there’s no scent from the scene at all and accuses the director of developing a chemical to remove the scent and that he’s working with the gang. Shirou proves it was him because he states he cannot smell any scent on Mr Yaba. The director forms into a beastman and flees — he’s a rhinoceros. Shiro manages to break his horn and knock him out.
How does BNA: Brand New Animal season 1, episode 3, “Rhino Melancholy” end?
One of the other colleagues at the centre hangs Michiru over the edge of the buildings threatening to let go. Michiru manages to stretch her arms and escape and she falls — Shirou softens her fall by getting underneath her. Michiru thanks Shirou for saving her. The directors from the medical centre admit guilt to embezzlement. Episode 3 sees Mirichu getting closer to the truth of the city as she becomes accustomed to the beastmen.
