Summary

This was my first experience with George Lopez and I’m glad Netflix brought it to my attention — We’ll Do It For Half is a blast.

Netflix Stand-Up Special George Lopez: We’ll Do It For Half was released on the platform on June 30, 2020.

George Lopez: We’ll Do It For Half fondly reminds me of Jo Koy: In His Elements — both comedians have an admirable pride in their culture. The former represents the Latinx community while the latter embraces the Filipino people — it’s difficult to not feel envious of such proud communities. Meanwhile, I’m British and we all hate each other, especially in 2020.

George Lopez waltzes on the stage and his opening gambit is a socially responsible one, tackling the absurd treatment of immigrants coming to America by the robot-like ICE who have a one-track mind when it comes to other races. The comedian jokes how it used to be easy to evade ICE and police authorities by pretending not to understand English — of course, that does not fly anymore. His joke continues as he wishes that Latinx community could decide who they kick out of the country but he makes a marked point that if immigrants make the effort to live in America, they should be allowed to stay — I wholeheartedly agree.

Once George Lopez: We’ll Do It For Half goes over the obvious problems with America at the moment, the comedian veers towards the Latinx culture he’s grown up in and he does it proudly and with venom. He pokes at the differences between past and present Latinx culture in America, making hilarious differences as he’s gotten older — he also touches on ageing relatives, how they never seem to understand bad diagnoses by the doctor before moving on to tough relatives. This is a complete stand-up that manages to keep fresh and on-beat throughout.

This was my first experience with George Lopez and I’m glad Netflix brought it to my attention — We’ll Do It For Half is a blast.
