As we rocket towards the end of this woeful season, Breathe: Into the Shadows episode 9, “Lights Out”, shows that Siya and Gayatri’s scheme in the previous episode was fruitful – their note is picked up! They might be back in captivity for now, but it doesn’t seem as though they’ll be there much longer, one assumes to the benefit of all of us.

We’re also reminded that Avi and Abha still have a target, Angad, whose daily routine they go over, but there’s a bit of a complication when Avi sees something of himself in this man of difficult personal demons and hard-fought change. Does he deserve to die? Isn’t it a bit late to be asking this question?

Blimey, how tedious. And things are even worse for the police. Zeba, the force’s public face, takes the brunt of the criticism, but with go-nowhere DNA, tampered evidence, and no real success, they’re a deserved laughing stock. The media have obviously seized on this, as they are wont to do, and I personally find it rather refreshing that the stupidity of this show is being taken to task, even if it is, admittedly, by other, equally stupid elements of the very same show. But whatever.

But a breakthrough! Well, sort of. Siya’s note makes it to the station, which is proof of life. So, good news. Kabir even remembers he’s a police officer and rightly gets a bit suspicious of Avi, who continues to reminisce about Angad, a college firestarter with a fear of the dark, which Avi determines after sharing a drink with the man and watching his home. All this deliberation, flashback-ing and supposed complexity amount to naught, though, as Avi decides to do him in anyway, eventually breaking into his home, cutting the lights and giving him an injection.

But Breathe: Into the Shadows episode 9 gives a real sense that Avi is close to being caught. Upon leaving Angad’s apartment, posting the video file of his murder on his Facebook page, he’s spotted by Meghna, who Angad has called earlier and mentioned his “old friend from college” to. Kabir’s hot on the trail, but it’s a little too early for Avi to be caught just yet, as the police find themselves at something of a loss once again.

Sloppy decision-making has defined this series, but it’s at a premium here in the obviously-titled “Lights Out”. The fact it’s difficult to tell what J is even up to feels less like deliberate, skillful obfuscation and more like terrible writing; it’s my job to stick around and find out what’s really going on here, but if it wasn’t, I can guarantee I wouldn’t be bothering. If you’ve stuck around this long, fair play to you, I guess.
