How does Little Voice season 1, episode 4, “Love Hurts” open?
Louie practices late seating at the theatre for his first day at work with his friends which provides plenty of comedy to kick off the series. As the viewer, you know this is going to go terribly when he starts his shift — bless him.
Simplicity
Bess, Samuel and Benny head to a studio. They have a couple of hours to do their thing. Bess starts singing and the producer seems impressed — Bess isn’t happy with the guitar on the intro and wants Samuel to start when the verse begins. She puts her foot down and insists she wants simplicity. Go on Bess! Tell em’.
I think we got it Dad
Bess’s father Percy joins and the producer is very complimentary of his music and states the “apple does not fall far from the tree” — funny how JJ Abrams has supported a storyline where the daughter has the same skills as her father — almost like he’s done this before. Percy has a go in the studio and sings; he’s frustrated with all the technical changes, explaining “it wasn’t like this back in his day”. Percy then gets annoyed with the number of syllables in the song. The producer and Bess tell Percy that “he’s got it” but he’s not for the patronizing bullsh*t and wants to get it right. He clearly scares Bess with his anger.
At the care home, she speaks to a quiet elderly lady and states that she hasn’t seen that look from him in a while. I’m sure there will be more context in later episodes — the man just seemed a bit frustrated to me.
Prisha has a male date…
Bess joins Prisha’s family for a meal. Prisha has a male date at the table. The table debate about marriage and the reasons for it. Prisha’s parents love the arranged date. Bess’s face says it all — she has an amount of sympathy for the situation.
A disaster first shift
Louie has his first shift at the theatre and helps people to their seats but it’s an absolute disaster. He tells someone they have a big head so they have to move seats (hilarious by the way) and then clambers over seats to get an autograph from someone famous in theatre. There’s a silence between Bess and Louie on the way home and she reads him a bedtime story when they get home. Bess is also worried about her father — she hasn’t heard from him.

At the storage units, Ethan asks Bess if she’s okay but she isn’t in the mood to talk. She cries when she gets inside. Ethan sends her a video of one of their walks through the city which cheers her up. Romance is not lost in this series. Episode 4 continues the “on the surface” obvious but sweet storyline as Bess gets studio time.
